p.1 #1 · 21 Mpixels and slide copying

I am wondering if anyone with 1Ds mkIII has had experience with copying slides. It should be at least as good as scanning using a film scanner such as Nikon Coolscan 5000, I believe. Am I wrong? What Macro lens would you recommend? Is EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro going to be good for this task?

I tried this the other day using a 100mm/2.8 Macro. I need to work on this more as I'm sure my technique could be improved, but it was immediately clear that the resulting images, while "good enough" for web use did not compare with 4000 ppi scans from an Imacon 949 or even a 4000 ppi scan from a Nikon 5000. The sharpness and amount of grain were better from the scanner. I used a 5000K light table.

The 100mm macro gives you 1:1 so a mounted slide will need part of the mount cropped off.

Thank you for your feedback. Do you think that sharpness issue is caused by imprecise focus of a lens of film flatness problem? 21 Mpixels is a close equivalent to 4000 dpi scan, I thought.

I use a professional Bowens Illumitran with a 1DsIII. A 50mm macro is good for the task, but I use my old enlarger lenses (Rodenstock and Schneider) of different FL between 50 and 105 mm actually much more than Canon's EF lenses for this kind of job. This gear is extremely low priced (I bought an Illumitran and 3 lenses for less than 200 euro) and very well capable of doing the job. The quality with a 1DsIII body is about as good as our Nikon Coolscan 8000, however the ICE software (scratch and dust reduction) of the Coolscans are a wonderful help to prevent a lot of postprocessing. The reason to work with the Bowens setup is speed. Being able to do 10-12 slides per minute is really a lot more EOSfun than the horrible time consumption of slidescanner. When the slides that we get are of doubtful quality we get the Coolscan, else it's the Illumitran. BTW, a 50mm macro can also be a great tool for copying prints (but mind the lighting issues!).

Have EOSfun!

Thank you eosfun. Very helpful. I think that there will be a lot of EOSfun with 21 Mpixel DSLRs
