BUT WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?
Who actually looks from the side when working on a photo? I just don't get it.
It is simply a physical impossibility to not be looking from an angle at some part of the screen... unless your screen is about 7" wide. The edges of the screen will ALWAYS be viewed from an angle simply because your eyes are narrower than the screen. The problem is exacerbated by widescreen monitors and the increasing size in monitors from year to year.
This is a good page to demonstrate the problem:

Also, a lot of TN panels are 6-bit panels while most IPS panels are 8-bit. 6-bit panels can either use dithering or FRC to simulate unachievable colors and both of those can be bothersome to some people, as well as being simply an inaccurate way of displaying colors. TN typically has a much more restricted color gamut.
Finally, quite frankly, I'd rather be able to sit comfortably and know I'm getting a good, accurate color view than sit bolt upright with my eyes dead on the middle of my monitor. Yes, that's a minor niggle, but it's there. The Gateway I had last would go to hell if I so much as relaxed my weight onto one of the arms of my office chair.
Unfortunately, the public has been brainwashed to think that response time is the ultimate measure of a monitor, even though response times aren't very standardized, only some people are sensitive to them, and the vast majority of computer use doesn't require a fast response. PVA & IPS panels just don't have the response time of the lousy TN panels.
