You want and "ips" panel. Basically, there are three types of panels and an ips has the widest viewing angle and best color, though the other two types typically have faster draw speeds and are cheaper. Google lcd panel type.

Peace,

The Samsung BW series are not good panels for imaging. If you will look you will see they are gradient from top to bottom. I believe they are TN type.

IPS panels the last time I looked were the top if not close to it. S-pva & pva are also decent panels for the working man like me.

I have a Samsung 215TW and love it. A PVA type it calibrates great and validates at a .7 and got great reviews when released.
If this panel or one like it is in your budget range you will be pleased.

Here is a site where you can query the manufacturer's model number to see what kind of panel it uses:

http://www.flatpanels.dk/panels.php

for instance searching for the "NEC 2690" above shows it has an 6ms AS-IPS panel

As others have already indicated, what you are looking for is an IPS panel. They don't have the best contrast but the color and contrast don't vary depending on the viewing angle.

Used Apple Cinema Display (23") - make sure to get the newer aluminum HD version, lower than $500 used.

I went to that site and typed-in my beloved Samsung SyncMaster 243T, but it gave no result.

This monitor is amazing for text and graphics (way too slow for video) but now you folks have me curious. Any idea how I can find out what type of panel it is?

Type in Samsung. You will get a list. It doesn't know "syncMaster":

Samsung 243T (Widescreen) has a 24 inch 30 ms PVA (Samsung LTM240W1-L03) panel.

The problem with PVA is they look a lot darker and have more contrast straight on (I have a 17" Samsung PVA), Look at the screen at a slight angle and the screen is much lighter.

HP LP2065 is cheap and a decent monitor. I have had very good results with mine. It is an IPS panel. Corners are a little suspect but overall an excellent screen. I know there was a lot of debate when these first came out but I haven't looked back at my purchase. I use EyeOne Display2 and Coloreyes to calibrate and get dead on colors when I use my lab's ICC profiles. You can probably get one of these for $300 new.

Thanks for the info, Geano.

I'll buy that. The contrast on my LCD goes South fast when you look from the side.

BUT WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?
Who actually looks from the side when working on a photo? I just don't get it.

As long as you look reasonably dead-on, the contrast remains virtually unchanged anywhere on the screen, even in the extreme corners. the color doesn't change no matter what the angle or screen area.

Isn't this more important?

It is simply a physical impossibility to not be looking from an angle at some part of the screen... unless your screen is about 7" wide. The edges of the screen will ALWAYS be viewed from an angle simply because your eyes are narrower than the screen. The problem is exacerbated by widescreen monitors and the increasing size in monitors from year to year.

This is a good page to demonstrate the problem:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php

Also, a lot of TN panels are 6-bit panels while most IPS panels are 8-bit. 6-bit panels can either use dithering or FRC to simulate unachievable colors and both of those can be bothersome to some people, as well as being simply an inaccurate way of displaying colors. TN typically has a much more restricted color gamut.

Finally, quite frankly, I'd rather be able to sit comfortably and know I'm getting a good, accurate color view than sit bolt upright with my eyes dead on the middle of my monitor. Yes, that's a minor niggle, but it's there. The Gateway I had last would go to hell if I so much as relaxed my weight onto one of the arms of my office chair.

Unfortunately, the public has been brainwashed to think that response time is the ultimate measure of a monitor, even though response times aren't very standardized, only some people are sensitive to them, and the vast majority of computer use doesn't require a fast response. PVA & IPS panels just don't have the response time of the lousy TN panels.

I don't mean the gradual falloff as you move to wider angle but abrupt changes at small angles from looking at it straight on. It is hard to judge contrast on PVA.

Hate to sound like a Mac fan here but precisely Apple cinemas don't do that.

Also, try Samsung or Acer. I've had awesome experience with those LCD's.
