what's interesting is if you look at the image of the 50ƒ1.4
there is no aperture ring or the nikon "bunny ear" aperture connection blades!
so the new lenses may indeed have auto aperture!
nice

It would be impossible for them not to have auto-aperture if they are to comply with the EF mount spec.
Well, the original Distagon 2.8/21 used glass which is not RoHS-compliant (probably lead-based), so the extra element isn't for extra corrections. The entire lens has been redesigned, with new glass. The CZ21 is and will be unique, and one like it can't be made again.
That being said, even if they only match, say, 95% of the original's optical qualities, that's still enough to blow away the competition, as it were.
The lens has been re-designed so we will have to wait and see how it compares against the older one but its not a forgone conclusion that this lens cannot exceed that of the older one just because it can't use non-environmental glass. Technology and design advancements have made possible lenses such as the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED that offer the sort of performance that no one would have dreamed possible when the older C/Y Distagon 21 originally was released.

Tariq, considering how the 14-24 and ZF18 compare, I wonder if the new 21 will be better. And at 2000 euros, even if the new 21 is US $2000, that's still a few hundred more than the 14-24. Zeiss had better knock one out of the park to make it worthwhile. Of course, the 21 does have a special magic. Well, we'll have to wait to see more, I guess.
I would figure in the years to come, we will see a full line up from Zeiss. There has been no better time for photography than the right now. Maybe sometime in the future we will see Leica come out with other mounts also?
Where is that 2000 euro figure coming from I wonder? The price I saw was 1400. I think Zeiss would be stupid to release this lens if it in fact does not exceed the C/Y 21 and Nikkor Zoom. They must know the expectations are going to be extremely high for this particular lens.

Tariq, you're right, my mistake. It's 1400 Euro. I don't know where I got that 2000 Euro figure either. Either way though, the ZF18 was quite appealing until I saw comparisons to the 14-24 and the way that Andi's copy came apart. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this new 21 can do.
Meanwhile, does anyone want to buy my mint Contax 21 with W-1 hood and metal cap? I just never use 21mm, so it sits on a shelf which is a bit tragic really. It needs a more deserving owner. Considering the L 200 f1.8 v f2 IS situation, I wouldn't count on the new 21 being better. It seems like some of the banned glass types imparted special qualities. All offers considered.

That's very exciting news! I feel like a kid before Xmas too. A quality 50/1.4 with electronic aperture control and AF confirm, count me in! Where can I preorder?
Given how good my C/Y 85 f/1.4 and 50 f/1.4 are, if the new ones are even only slightly better, with all the other benefits such as auto aperture then I'll be lining up. Won't even consider the Sigma 50 f/1.4 now.
What chances a 100 macro but please 1:1 and a 28/35 TS-E would be to die for.
Yes, I like my aperture ring too. I also like seeing the changes in DoF as I stop down.
If it is true that there will be a $300 premium on ZEs over ZF versions, I will probably stick with ZFs for use on the D700. And if I want to use one on my Canon, I throw on an adapter. Hopefully there will be a 21 version for ZF.
