p.1 #1 · Corrupted HD?

I just started using a brand new Seagate external HD for storing our summer vacation pictures a couple of week ago. To my dismay, I started to see quite a lot of pictures got corrupted after I converted them from RAW (Roughly 450 out of 1800). I called Seagate tech support and run some diagostics using Seatools and it passed the tests without any problem. So not sure what that means, but it's quite clear that something is wrong. Unfortunately, I bought it a couple years back and didn't use it until recently, so it's out of warranty. Good thing is that all the originals are still on my CF cards.

I found out later that Seagate bought Maxtor. If I knew it earlier, I wouldn't have bought it given that I have 4 or 5 dead HDs laying around, surprisingly or not surprisingly, they are all Maxtors. Looks I am in bad luck. I thought Seagate was a good brand, not any more. I won't buy another Seagate/Maxtor from now on, no matter how cheap they go.

Well, we have defective drives from a half-dozen manufacturers here and there aren't that many different brands anymore. All are prone to failure. Always keep at least two copies of your data, preferably 3, including one in an off-site location.

Jayem,

You haven't given us NEARLY enough info to comment much or help.

However, from the little you do write, I don't think you have a drive problem. It sounds more like an application problem, or maybe some errant corrupted preferences, or an OS problem, or.....

Two things:

1) I agree with Cableaddict. You are converting files from RAW and the problem is occurring... sounds like an application/driver error.

2) Seagate makes excellent hardware. Don't be so quick to judge just because they bought another company. This should actually have a positive impact on Maxtor rather than a negative impact on Seagate.

Thanks for your suggestions. I certainly don't want it to be the HD problem...

I should mention that some of the small JPEG files straight out of camera (although not nearly as many) and some pictures from a different folder also got corrupted.

If you have ideas, please let me know.

Here are some corrupted images;

So your files are getting corrupted ON THE WAY to the drive. RAW files look OK until converted, because the forks (or whatever) have corruption.

Try a new card reader.

If that doesn't do it, I suspect your data card.

If It's not the reader & is happening on multiple cards, your camera is likely fuqued.

FWIW, I really like #4 !

You like #4? Maybe I can get something out of this and make it into a piece of abstract art.

I am pretty sure it's not my flash card, or card reader, or the camera. I have worked on these files before in LR and adjusted them, but didn't export. They were all fine at that time. When I went back to get the large JPEGs, that's when I started see the problem.

Yes, and a corrupted fork will do that.

-Just more things to check.

Impossible to tell where the problem lies really but my Seagate drives have been absolutely bombproof.

Perhaps try just transferring a lot of pictures to the drive, cutting out LR or whatever. See if any get corrupted.

Oh and I like #2. The others look like mangled photos. #2 could pass as art I reckon

I can't help you with the drive problems, but I like your images of Bodie Island Light.

Kevin, thanks.

Yeah, I went there in late afternoon that day, and it was bathed in gorgeous lighting. I stayed there for a couple of hours until sun down. Had to fight off all the mosquittos though.
