Quick question that popped into my mind today. I've started using a split-prism screen in my 1D3, love it to check focus accuracy, takes away a bit of the guess-work, especially with the new 85L toy (which is kind of tricky to focus, both AF and MF).
Now the manual states I should avoid using Evaluative and Spot metering. Fine by me.
What happens when I connect my flash: can I leave that in Evaluative or should I change it to Average as well. The latter would seem likely but so far I've counted on Evaluative and have gotten kind of used to it.
Since you have a baseline of experience with evaluative flash metering you should be able to detect whether or not its working the same way or not. The most systematic way to test would be to put set the camera on a tripod, then try both modes with both the split-screen and the old one as a baseline.
Based on using split-screen focusing on other cameras I'm guessing that it will change the way the light reaches the exposure sensor in the most critical weighted zone. If that happens in some consistent manner it may be simply a matter of adjusting your current FEC baseline up or down. But since the angle of view of the viewfinder by exposure sensor is different than the eye piece it may be seeing the split area as half light / half dark which would skew the readings beyond the point of correcting consistently.
can not help you. But where in france do you live? I would love to test your equipment without flash. Split screen is the best I ever did before AF occurs. and it still gives me a better feling, then camera choices anything to focus on.
