The CP filter has quite a few uses - here's a Readers Digest version: 1. Can be used to, for example, darken skies and increase contrast with clouds in landscapes. 2. Can be used to reduce reflections - on glass, water, foliage, etc. 3. Can function as a quick and dirty neutral density filter in some situations in which you want to increase exposure time or use a larger aperture. If you are into long exposures already and you have a specific need for it, some sort of neutral density filter could also be useful - but don't rush out and buy one unless you understand why.
