Like it better for what though? Serious question, not trying to be negative, what would 50D buyers like better that they would take a lower speced camera for the same price? I'm interested. If the answer is the glass then doesn't that just mean that Canon have used their popularity in glass to provide less camera features at a given price point? Again this is with reference to the 50D and D300 being the SAME price in the UK (50D more expensive at release). If I'm a guy in a shop wanting to buy either the 50D or D300 and both are the same price, why would you advise me to take a 50D eventhough it isn't the pro body the D300 is?

Great points! But the typical person that walks into a store is already decided anyway. If the buyer is shopping for a system, you are totally correct, but most people's first camera is not a 50D or a D300, and by the time they buy one, they are already invested and somewhat brand brainwashed. Canon's marketing research must have shown that the Brits are must less likely to switch systems, hence the higher price.
I use Canon at home, and Nikon stuff when I second shoot on weekends. Personally, I like everything about Nikon better, except for the file produced. Whether it is glass, or the sensor, or the in-camera processing, I couldn't tell you. And to me the output is what is important. And my 40D files look better than the files I get from a D300 to my eye. That is what I would tell the guy in the store. Look past the marketing and features that you will not use, and look at the results.
All that aside, I really hate it when companies do the marketing magic pricing. And to be completely honest, if I lived in the UK, I would probably buy a Nikon just to spite Canon, because the gap between 30D/D200 has shrunk to the small gap between the 40D/D300, and it is only a matter of time before a complete parity arises. To me, Canon seems to be much more heavy handed than most companies in the marketing dept., and I don't like that very much. (completely unsubstantiated personal opinion there, not meant to stir up the pot in any way).
So I guess I agree with you mostly, and disagree only because of my experience with both systems, and while the D300 has more value for the price, the output, in my opinion, isn't as good as the 40D (I don't know about the 50D yet).
