Ok - I'll take the bait and post a couple of shots from last week. I welcome, with trepidation your comments and criticism.

One of the boys is a little oof on this one, but I love the expression on the younger one anyway.

#1 and #3 have insufficient DOF if I'm not mistaken (probably because you're pretty close to them + FL). The kid to the right is OOF due to it on both shots.

#2 is nice tho

I'm with you on #3 (they wouldn't stay still and I just blew that one), but I don't see #1 as being our of focus.

Agree on DOF but I had to use flash because it was getting pretty dark and I hope it worked with the blurred bay anyway. I consider #3 a fun "throwaway": one boy hamming and one rolling his eyes.

i think these are good efforts! good attempt to balance flash with ambient (something I have to work on myself).

i think 2 would be really good if he were not in the center of the frame. think if he were to the far right and the long pier was coming out from the left...

but solid work!

Maybe it's late and I need to sleep hah. Well, conceding on #1 upon further review But for something seems to be unsharp on your older kid on that shot... Beats me.

Were you shooting with flash on manual btw? or whatever the TTL system is called in Canon land?

Well his hair is certainly not sharp....or combed

Yes. Camera mode was manual. 430 Ex in ETTL mode.

Canerino - thanks for your comments. I didn't have much time for composition, but I agree that probably would have worked better. It's a little off balance;I'll try to crop and see if that makes a difference. .
