p.1 #1 · Basic LR question for dummy

I feel like a fool. I have been using LR since the second beta. I love it. But I have always been afraid to update LR because of problems encountered once updating to one of the later betas. Edits appeared lost and only recovered with lots of work and able assistance from others. Some appeared with broken links. It was a painful mess. I am still using LR 1.0 because of this. On a Mac.

The question is simple. How do I backup my edits? And where are they? I clearly need to update to a newer version (not yet to 2.0--I'll wait for 2.1), but I can't get myself to pull the trigger because I can't convince myself with any degree of confidence that the edits are available to restore if there is a problem.

I have searched the LR help library, the LR users forum, here and elsewhere with no luck. My guess is my question is so basic and obvious that there appears to be no need to address it.

Can some kindly individual take pity on this poor fool? Maybe explain it in terms that a third grader can understand? Hold my hand? Would therapy help?

Thanks in advance (he mumbled in embarassment).

Lorin

From one LR beginner to another:

When you bring in your images to LR and you edit them, there is no destructive editing taking place. In other words, the changes you make get written on to LR's catalog.

If you want that file to be saved out with those settings you have to export it out with those settings.

Now if you want to back up your settings you have to back up your catalog data file go to
edit - catalog settings - choose catalog backup on restart - optomize/relaunch - and save out a copy of the catalog settings.

Keep in mind this is making a backup of the SETTINGS (the editing you did on the pictures) and NOT the actual images that are being backed up.

Thanks for the reply. I have a good grasp of the non destructive editing of LR. I don't want to backup the edited photos by exporting, but just be sure the edits themselves are available to restore if needed. But what has me confused are the edits--or settings. I have LR configured to automatically backup on startup once a week. But I can't confidently put my finger on those backups in Finder. I'm sure they are there, but where? And that is the rub if I need to restore after a botched upgrade. Restore from what or from where?

My goal is to create a second backup file of the edits, not the edited photos--maybe even on a different disk--that I can easily find in Finder and point LR to if I need to restore.

Do I do that with catalog settings? It must be hidden from me.

Thanks again.

To make a backup of your edits, all you have to do is backup the LR catalog. You can do this through your preferences for LR to backup on every restart or on demand, however, you do have to restart LR to implement it.

Or, you can write the metadata to the files on both your working drive and your backup drive.

Lightroom is not duplicating the images or backing up your images in any way, its just writing a side file with the edits you made. LR is set up so that you can find files using keywords and such through lightroom.

Now if you want to find your files on finder you would have to search by file names which wont really work well since they are usually named file001 002 003... etc.

You say you want to back up the edits.... exporting is the same as saving out in Lightroom. So just export out all your edits to a backup destination.

UNLESS you want to back the actual EDIT settings. just back up your LR catalog.

You can search in Finder by keywords. From Finder: File>Find .... in the resulting window select keywords from the drop down menu and type in the keyword(s) you want it to search for.

Thanks Butch. But I must be dumber then a stone. My problem is getting LR to backup to a new location. I have it set to backup once a week, and I see that it is backing up to the default catalog. And I can see how to get it to backup again on restart. But what I can't figure out is how to get it to back up to a new and different location, say a different drive. If I go to Catalog Settings in File, it allows me to determine how often to backup to the already determined location, and I can't seem to change the location. If I go to Preferences, I can change the Default Catalog, but I don't see how to create a new catalog with all the edits in it. If I go to File I can create a New Catalog, but i don't see how to copy the edits into this new catalog. Do I export everything to a new catalog? I thought that would export the photos along with the edits. All I want are the edits. The original photo files are safe on a different drive.

Like I say, I feel like an idiot here. You are all probably rolling your eyes. Maybe like I'm a third grader.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi Lorin,

Go into your Catalog preferences. Set it to back up on next restart. Restart LR. When it does restart, a prompt will appear to back up the catalog. Click on the choose button and navigate where you want the catalog to be saved. Unless you change this, it will save the backup to this location each time you backup.

Butch--

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sometimes it is so obvious you don't see it. I always blew by that screen on start up by just clicking, but then I couldn't find what I needed when the program was running.

Like I said--like I'm a third grader.

Thanks again.
