p.1 #1 · Gelatin II filter for 200/1.8L

i was wondering if the standard drop-in filter that came with the 200/1.8L in the Gelatin II filter holder is the same one that comes in the 300/2.8L, i need to get a new one and once you mention '200/1.8L' places immediately say 'no, we dont carry that' without even listening to the rest of the sentence.

also the seal that is on the lens itself that seals the gap between the lens and the filter holder is fading, i was wondering how i could go about getting that fixed, again i do not want to talk to any service center because of their dismissive attitude towards discontinued lenses, instead if its the same one as the 300/2.8L it looks like i can simply get another one and stick it on myself.

any help and feedback is appreciated

The 200L and the 300L non IS take the same holder , 48mm i think. The 300L IS takes a 52mm filter holder.
Regarding the seal, why not talk to the guys at your local automotive supply shop, im guessing they will have a gasket type material that will do the job.

thanks for the reply, i'm wondering if the actual glass filter that drops in the holder is the same in the 300L as in the 200/1.8L..does anybody else have any experience with this?

I have the 'Canon Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52' and according the instructions that came with it...

"The '52' series of drop-in filters was developed for the (EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF500mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF600mm f/2.8L IS USM) 'L' series of IS super-telephoto lenses."

Hopefully that helps.

...is compatible with EF 200mm f/1.8L, EF 300mm f/2.8L, EF 400mm f/2.8L & LII, EF 500mm f/4.5L, EF 600mm f/4L, EF 1200mm f/5.6L Lenses.

Yes, the glass is the same in both, I had both for a few days this week as i was selling my 200L , and wanted to keep the best filter holder and glass filter, i swapped holders and glass between each lens.

It looks like B&H might have it for $90 (you'll have to check to be sure it's the right one, but it appears to be). Link

ok so i went on a mission to finally find this glass drop-in filter and it seems impossible to find, i even went to a Canon Service Center and they told me to simply buy a regular UV filter and have the ring taken off at a glass shop, has nobody ever had to replace this?
