Here's an extra push (shove) for the 400 f/5.6. I cannot say enough good things about the lens - fast handling, tack sharp, and impossibly quick and sure AF. And for a white lens, cheap. Unless you are shooting where there is little light, you will never regret getting this lens. Best reach for the buck - by far.
This Red-rumped Swallow is one of the fastest, agile and most difficult of the hirundines to shoot in-flight. I liked this shot because it was against a dark background instead of a clear blue sky and the "red rump" shows rather nicely.
Good light gave me a shutter speed of 1/8,000s which negates IS. Interestingly this was not only shot in AI Servo against a "busy" background, a scenario in which the 1DMk3 is supposed to not perform, it was also shot with "ring of fire" rather my usual centre AF point with two left/right assist points.
I have noticed this lens seems to be the weapon of choice in mm/$ for the BIF people.
Anyone here use it to shoot field sports? If so, could you post a couple of shots?
Just curious, as I was thinking this lens could be my first super-tele...

How does this compare to a 300F4L+1.4TC?
Nice results can be had with that combo but the 400 f5.6L wins in AF speed
and IQ wide open. The 300 f2.8 and 1.4 is right there, however...but 4x the $$
There are some seriously glorious photos in this thread. But I wish this thread had not been started! I had all but decided to go for the 300 f/4 + 1.4TC. Back to Indecision 2008 :-)

I had the 300F4 and I like the 400mm much more - I would not buy the 300mm again as I have other Lenses at that range.. but I never see a time when the 400mm wont be in my line up of Lenses
I live in the UK and for out door shooting a little common sense like upping the ISO when its bad weather - and you wont go far wrong with the 400mm
hope you dont mind if I post you some samples from this great Lens http://eventphotographer.smugmug.com/photos/358892949_ZGvpm-L.jpg
Well I started this thread asking for help, and I got it. Just to let you know I ordered one and it arrived today No guessing what I'll be doing this weekend as long as the rain stays away. I would be keen to know what your preferred settings are?
Set the Focus switch to the longer MFD for faster AF performance (8m, I guess) and shoot away wide open in AI Servo. You might notice that the hood is a bit tight and takes some learning to get it to squeeze and come all the way back. Congrats !!
