Maybe it's me (most likely) or maybe the fact that I really enjoy coffe, but I could not get good focus hand holding the 400. I would find it informative if people posting these wonderful shots would also inform as to handheld, monopod, tripod, other. In deciding about a lens purchase handholdability (is that a word?) is an important consideration.

All my pictures with this lens are handheld. Trenchmonkey says everything you need about the technique. And I also enjoy coffee as much as you can imagine !

A tip for those who have just gotten the lens. If you are going to do a lot of handheld shots, remove the tripod mount. I took mine off about two years ago and in my opionion it makes the lens lighter and easier to hold and use.

If you're going to hand hold this lens take the tripod mount off. I notice while supporting the middle of this lens my hand is on the focusing ring, after the lens achieves focus the ring can be moved and lose focus so I tape it.

It's a stellar lens. For the price I would say it can't be beat, in terms of portability and sharpness.

Here's an extra push (shove) for the 400 f/5.6. I cannot say enough good things about the lens - fast handling, tack sharp, and impossibly quick and sure AF. And for a white lens, cheap. Unless you are shooting where there is little light, you will never regret getting this lens. Best reach for the buck - by far.

And one from this morning:

http://www.pbase.com/accentor/image/102160345

This Red-rumped Swallow is one of the fastest, agile and most difficult of the hirundines to shoot in-flight. I liked this shot because it was against a dark background instead of a clear blue sky and the "red rump" shows rather nicely.

Good light gave me a shutter speed of 1/8,000s which negates IS. Interestingly this was not only shot in AI Servo against a "busy" background, a scenario in which the 1DMk3 is supposed to not perform, it was also shot with "ring of fire" rather my usual centre AF point with two left/right assist points.

I have noticed this lens seems to be the weapon of choice in mm/$ for the BIF people.

Anyone here use it to shoot field sports? If so, could you post a couple of shots?
Just curious, as I was thinking this lens could be my first super-tele...

Well the hurricane shutters are down and no more rain, so took the day off and headed out to the everglades to try out the new 400mm 5.6, I'm used to using the 100-400, so i kinda missed the zoom till i saw the results. Here are a couple from today.

Hey Dave, watch out for "Gustov", we're usually the one's ducking the storms down here. Might want to head down here to hide out.

How does this compare to a 300F4L+1.4TC?

Nice results can be had with that combo but the 400 f5.6L wins in AF speed
and IQ wide open. The 300 f2.8 and 1.4 is right there, however...but 4x the $$

There are some seriously glorious photos in this thread. But I wish this thread had not been started! I had all but decided to go for the 300 f/4 + 1.4TC. Back to Indecision 2008 :-)
