I've shot both prior to buying and ended up with the AB's because of portability and weight. Honestly other then build quality which is almost relative to what you actually need them to do (bounce off a floor or rock) then I don't see why people get so upset over it.
The Profoto do give amazing light out put but so do the AB's.
I'd like to hear some one from either "SNOB" side actually state a real reason or real world event with them at a REAL SHOOT, NOT in front of your computer specing the two out on web site's so you have ammo to e-thug (yes I said e-thug, see 1998 internet forums for the proper definition)

Other then that let both companies keep producing lights and compete for market shares, it only helps us. I also realize that profoto is not really competing with Paul but you can't tell me that he isn't getting on to the Profoto radar by now...

Will the Einstein 1000 watt be able to run off battery power C cells or a new power pack?? for location work?

Einstein 1000 will have a jack for external 12V battery. Any 12V battery will do - Lead Acid, a couple of lantern cells, car battery, etc. No room inside for internal batteries.

Well that is great news better then great fantastic..
Any 12 v battery i can get togather will work. So it works like a on camera strobe but with more power and a flash tube. is that about right.
I have two Metz 70MZ large flashes but still not the power i nedd for shooting on the beach in the sun.
Is the head turning the 12v into the 1000 watts with no other parts needed like on a on camera flash was i right about that..

I was going to buy a Ranger RX kit but this now sounds like another choice to look into.

So
the Einstein 1000 watt can run off any 12v battery.

What is the recycle time when hooked to a 12V battery?

Will the new commander set the flash output and trigger the Einstein?.

What is the LBs of the Einstein.
Do you have any photos of it to see?
How much will it cost?
When can i order one soon i hope..
Can i get on a ready to buy list.

Thanks

We're testing power supply designs now. We can probably get close to 2 second recycle at 1000WS from a 5-10AH 12V battery, with several hundred shots per charge depending on battery size. Plug it into your car battery and shoot forever.

The 500WS model has built in C cells - rechargeable NiMH and will yield 100 to 140 500WS shots per charge.

Yes, Cyber Commander will set everything on up to 16 Einsteins or other Buff lights.

What are "LBs"?

No photos yet, no price fixed yet - somewhere around $700-$800 for the 1000WS, $500 for the 500WS. We're running a bit behind on development so no release date yet. No ready list yet either, but once we start building we can make as many as you can order.

Wow this sounds good.

Just a few last questions if you will.

The 12v plug - what kind of plug is it? a thick wire or a small mini jack size wire..
Will the 500w version have a external battery plug for longer shooting and more shots hooked to a outside battery.

How well do you think it will hold up outside on location like at the beach for everyday shooting in the sun, wind and sea mist?.
If i could get two years out of one 1000w version i would be very happy.

I see it has a fan inside will that reduce the battery power a lot killing it for less shots when using battery power any estimate on this.

Will it have any kind of handle on top for toting it around easy?

Do you think we will see the full system for sale buy the end of the year? or atleast by the end of Feb..We get things popping around here in March then its heavy shooting all summer till Nov.. We can wait till the end of Feb if we have to but would love to start playing with it...

Thanks

Ok one more ?

i have been using batterys that i make into my own packs for year now from a battery supplier.
If i was to buy this battery from them
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2069

and i used it with the 1000w flash how many full power pops do you think i might get
I would like to use a lighter NiMH Battery Pack over the heavy block batterys.
Thanks again.

That is a 13 amp battery. Capacity is pretty linear with amperage. The exception is how deeply some batteries can cycle.

That battery is 5.5 pounds. You can get a 9 amp sealed lead acid battery (SLA) of the same weight for $20 - instead of $200.

The incremental capacity really isn't worth the cost.

Something in the range of 500 flashes at 1000WS from a 9Ah battery. Proportionally more flashes at lower power. 7AH batteries are pretty common in alarm systems.

Apparently Paul has plans to make an Elinchrom Adapter.... That could make me an Einstein user if I could stick a deep octa and various Rotalux boxes on them.

A little comment was made on page 9 of the Einstein thread on the Bluff forum 3/4 of the way down the page.

Very exciting stuff!

Jammy,
It looks like a WL speed ring adaptor could be fitted to the speed ring on the Elinchrom modifiers. Have you tried that?

Any more new information on the Einstein.. any closer to coming out?

Looks like radio poppers have beet the Cyber commander to the punch in many ways.

I am hoping the Cyber commander will have a added in feature for running Nikon SB800s in manual mode so the user can change the manual flash output from the Cyber commander will it be able to do that?.
I don't want to have to buy both the RPs and Cyber commander.
But i really want the Einstein soon..

Alright, so we're all excited about the new features. The system sounds great, two things I wish for that probably won't happen, but we can't please everyone...

1) Multivoltage I like traveling with my lights (although I know they're going to be battery operated).
2) Profoto mounting system, it's to late in the game to achieve this, but I love the Profoto system, it loves me!

A few points from personal experience (and a little back story). I got into lighting at the end of highschool, and picked up myself some Alien Bees in college. I loved the lights and took wonderful pictures. My only problem with ABs were that the speedring connector drove me crazy, I pinched my finger and hit the bare bulb 100+ times trying to get modifiers on, and this was with 4 years of experience! I've never had any problems with the power consistency of the lights, nor did I ever have problems with the build quality, I've dropped the suckers on a couple of occasions. I don't know about color consistency, because for the longest time I shot in AWB mode while doing studio portraits ()... But I'm sure they're fine for that to.

I picked up a Ringflash my last year of college, LOVED IT, it to this day gave me better looking photos then my profoto ringflash (acute series)... The reason being I think, and I'm sure other will agree was the frosted plastic cover you could put over the lights. thinking that, I purchased 2 profoto attachments for the ringflash and still NEVER get the same awesome photos. In fact my profoto ringflash broke on me once, and I've used it 4 times in two years

When I moved to Singapore I found myself looking at two options (sold the bees because didn't want lights that weren't multivoltage). I could either get profoto or elinchrom... I chose profoto because they were just a little bit more money and the quality seemed better by all account. (it was the RX vs Acute2) that at the RX series isn't multivoltage though the BX series is, and not as good as profoto.

Anyway, I've been using profoto for almost two years now, and although I swear the alienbees ringlight is better then the profoto system, I have found my perfect modifier attachment. The thing is genius, and I would never give that up. So A) I'm hoping alienbees can match that attachment, 1 for the focusability that simon mentioned, and two for my poor little fingers that had to endure years or pinching etc, Oh and BTW, elinchrom's attachments are worse then AB lights. Often when doing location work, my friend brings his elinchroms and I leave my profotos at my studio, when I'm working with his elinchrom lights I think to myself how lucky I am to have profoto in studio. BTW, a 5ft octabox is a task for the elinchrom modifier mount, nevermind the day we fooled with the 7fter....

One problem with profoto I find I don't like how they dial in power, and I find it a bit limiting, I rather move my lights then fool with the pack some days... This can pose to be a bit of a problem because it changes the look I'm trying to create. I could remedy this with the D4 pack, but then I'd be eating KD for the next year...

Anyway, that was an off topic rant, but I guess my point is... ABs are great lights, at any price... I purchased into profoto because they have a good reputation and the mounting system was genius...
If the Einstein lights are multivoltage, I'll be ordering some to suppliment my Profoto kit, Currently I have 4 lights and often times I wish I were shooting with 6-7 lights, so rather then borrowing my friends elinchrom I'm thinking of picking up 2-4 Einstein lights (its that or the profoto compacts), so I really hope they're multivoltage and am wishing for a nice mount!

I'm hoping my little story will christmas magic me one of my above listed requirements

Einstein runs from 90VAC to 265VAC, 50/60HZ and 12V. It's full auto switching. Sorry we're behind schedule but it's geting there.
