self-explanatory

also, i know it has been said that the forums are self-moderating. however, still need mods who can move threads that don't belong in a certain forum. not sure if we have enough mods to do that.

i believe these suggestions would go a long way in improving the quality of this forum.

all in favour of "Rumour Forum"?

cheers,

Simon

Rumors flourish just before major shows, meaning before likely new product announcements. That is not worth a special forum IMHO.

I'd rather look pastCanon rumors on the Canon forum, than have to look past Nikon rumors on the "Rumor Forum".

Sheez, you'd think that it's impossible to tell which threads are rumors and just not click on them.

all: i've seen this done quite effectively on other forums (NASIOC being one). it's great.

paul: clearly, people are going to keep posting rumor threads, regardless

philber: it doesn't take any extra "space" to initialize a rumors forum. it's just an organization thing.

david: regardless of what you say, a lot of us still post inane comments in these rumor threads. they very rapidly degenerate into crap.

And is that the fault of those who start the rumor threads, or the fault of those who post inane comments, or those who start posting crap?

Currently the Canon SLR forum is the busiest on FM, and the first page covers about 1 day's worth of topics. I think that's fine. Unless the 1st page covers less than 2 hours of topics, there's no need to split forums.

david, you entirely miss the point. the fact is that things are the way they are and that people obviously don't have the discipline to control themselves. this isn't the blame game, it's a constructive suggestion.

if people think my suggestion sucks, then i don't care. i thought i'd make one in light of all the complaining around here lately.

I agree, Simonella, but rumormongers usually want maximum exposure, which means they would post in a mainstream forum rather than where they should. Also the FM home page sums up threads from all forums, so the summary would include rumors threads as well. The creation of a forum might actually encourage their proliferation...

For those that don't remember, we had aggregated new-product/rumor threads here before. IMO it was terrible.

When someone posted real, interesting, or helpful information, it was quickly lost in the mess. Best to keep things running as is and using a little will power to keep oneself out of the dreaded 50d/5d2, Mark III af, Nikon rules threads.

Be smarter than your mouse. A challenge for some, but with practice most, but not all, posters here can choose which threads to read.

Have you visited the Nikon forum? Even at the height of show rumor time there's maybe one rumor thread on there. Its primarily the Canon forum that gets filled with the rumor threads. If there was a rumor forum, it'd probably be 95% Canon rumors and 5% Nikon rumors...

I think the rumor threads should all be merged into one behemoth garbage thread. I loved that approach.

Further, there's no sharp dividing line between threads that are solely based on rumor and those that are completely dealing with facts. I scan the Canon board because I learn useful stuff here, and I also can enjoy a certain amount of speculation or playing with ideas. I may be misled by a subject line occasionally, but it's not a big deal to figure out where I'll find something useful and where I won't. If we tried to keep any hint of speculative posting to a separate board, this one would become pretty dry, and I don't think it would become any more useful. Just my opinion. I sympathize with the frustration expressed by the OP, and could wish for things to be "better", but a separate rumor forum would only make it worse for me, I think.

If there is to be a rumor thread, it would perhaps be good to expand it slightly to include the various brand competition/anxiety threads that seem to proliferate here also - perhaps a "speculation & comparison" forum?

FWIW, I agree with those who point out that it's possible to ignore these threads in the canon forum - though the subject headers are often deceptive - but sometimes interesting discussions do emerge as these threads evolve. It would be good to have a forum to house them where they could exist without inciting mini-flame wars about how annoying they are & how they don't belong in the regular canon forum ...

In all honesty, there aren't that many 'garbage' threads plugging up the main index page. It's easy (if you use some restraint) to look for what you want. It's not so easy to refrain from taking a look, even though you're admittedly 'not into that sort of thing'. Kind of like looking at car wrecks, a favorite pasttime of mine.

I think that 'other forum' with the dedicated Rumor page ends up creating more garbage than is warranted.

When I was 13 (50 years ago) the automobiles changed stylying ever year and EVERYONE tried to guess what they would look like and what had changed.

Nothing has changed. Keep things the way they are.

GO RUMORS

well, despite all the nay-sayers, it looks like the majority so far (39-28) are in favor of a separate forum. all of this is of course based on OPINION of those on this canon SLR forum.
