A few questions re: limited prints. Is there a strict definition of what is and isn't a limited print?
To go into more details:
- is there an agreed "limit"? i.e. 20 prints, 100 prints, 1000 prints...
- is a limited print linked to the size of the print? e.g. a series of 20 "big" pictures, but unlimited print of smaller pictures
- is it possible to sell limited prints of a pic if the same pic has already been published, e.g. in a magazine (in small or large size, depending on distribution of magazine, etc)
I am asking this in the following context: I will publish a few pics in a magazine with limited distribution, but was thinking at the same time of showing them in an exhibition where the possibility to sell limited prints might arise... but I would be interested in "generic" answers as well.
I would think that "limited" means whatever you decide it means. The important thing is that your buyers are appraised of the limit at the time of purchase.
If you promise "Only 20 large-format prints will be made" then yup, it's limited. In truth, that seems like a good idea... have a select amount of large, original, top quality prints and then have hundreds (or whatever number is appropriate) of 4x6 postcards all over the place to drum up press for the image in question.
