Canon should just offer a significantly smaller 5D with 16MP, one and a half stops better high ISO performance, live-view and slightly better weather sealing for an absolute maximum of 2500USD.
This would make Canon hobbyists upgrade from the crop cameras, and pros buy it as a backup because of the smaller size, full frame, and high ISO performance. In the eyes of the consumer not yet commited to a particular system, Canon will have a competing product for Nikon's D700. Canon 5D owners wanting to upgrade from the 5D simply because it is three years old will either upgrade or be tempted to remain with Canon anyway because of their prior significant investment in lenses (they no doubt do have several lenses if they have a 5D) and the introduction of a new L series lens with mass appeal that will eat up the hobbyist's cash funds for another year, after which time they may be tempted by falling 1DsII prices.
Anyway, the critical feature is size. Look on the Canon website. The 5D is marketed (meer-cat-ed?? I like that!) on the basis of a full frame camera that is discrete enough to travel with. I think Canon should carry that concept a step further.
For the love of God, don't give us a video option. I shoot stills. I don't want a hole in the front of my dSLR designed to allow water ingress, record muffled conversations and all the loud clicking noises caused by me changing settings on the camera.
