MkIII AF satisfaction Poll
I love it and so do my clients (good from new or fixed)
I still suffer AF problems, but for I'm maganing with it
I find it too inconsistent for me to use professionaly

Group,
Im not trying to make life difficult but I am trying to get a handle on how widespread the current AF issues are and what effect they have on owners.

This is for owners only please

Thanks for posting this.

I'm also interested if newer bodies are doing better regarding AF problems.

Hey no worries. It needs to be bumped, it has to be up for a while and get some good numbers in it for it to be of any real value.

1Ds3 owner... Not completely satisfied with AF when using wide(r) apertures (from wide open to f/2.8) when using the outer AF points (and to a lesser extent the center AF point) in One Shot. Work arounds are either to MF with these apertures or to stop down to at least f/4. Not ideal, but I'll manage (pro use). Mainly because the IQ is stunning

Based on your previous posts I knew you had an issue with your 1Ds MarkIII. There was a submirror recall for the 1D MarkIII as you know and I believe Lars was referring to the notion that you have to stick to just one, either the 1Ds MarkIII or 1D MarkIII. I would say the way it was presented, owners of either camera have voted or will be voting, which will give us a skewed picture. Well not this kind of poll is valid anyway.....

I'm satisfied with my 1D (green dot whatever that means) and the three zooms I bought. I've only had it a few days but it just works.

as i find the 3 choices a bit outlandish i'll say that mine works considerably better then when it was originally purchased. it focuses as as it should. had it performed as it does now from the beginning i may not have done what i have done. unfortunately now i have found a need for a more consistant product set to use.

There's not enough data yet for serious conclusions of course. But it strikes me that still about 25% have problems, which is the same ratio when I did a similar poll in March.

I'm still hoping newer bodies are doing better.

My 1D just showed up Monday. It seems to work just fine with the three lenses I got along with it. I live in the Arizona desert so I'm testing it out in bright sunlight and temps as high as 115F.

Thanks Gary. I'm glad the 1DIII works great for you. I hope the newer bodies are better, because I'm on the fence for a 1DIII for quite a while now.

BTW: nice whisky! do you drink whisky yourself? I'm a big fan of Scotch single malt

I bought the 1D from Canoga Camera. The serial number is 57xxxx and the box had a green dot on it for whatever that means. Go ahead and buy it. You'll love the thing.

I just lost my wife after a long bout with cancer. That big Ghurka cigar and the 21 year old single malt (really really really good) was for a bit of a celebration of her life. If I hit the lottery I'd drink nothing but this stuff. My wife used to tell me the chances of hitting the lottery increase if I actually buy a ticket.

AI Servo has improved and is very good now. Like anything AI it can be fooled but after a while you get to know what that is. Just like auto exposure, sometimes I just know it is going to meter wrong and I compensate accordingly.

I've stood out front of my house and shot cars coming down the street using AI Servo in the hot desert sun and it works fine too. I'm just starting to get a good feel for this thing and like it more all the time. Either I got lucky or Canon has their wagons in a circle now on the 1D.

Mine is 55xxxx SN ..... my first few shots were horrible...... then I read the manual

Once I got her set up right, everything was, and still is, awesome.

My most used setup is a 500mm F/4 IS..... sometimes with a 1.4X.... and almost always, handheld.

When I get a bad shot, I know it while I'm pressing the shutter button. Any bad shots are my fault. I'm not as fast as I used to be.

Gary,

My condolences on your loss.

505xxx SN Mine has been great since last May/June when I first got it. I have not noticed much if any change after the fix and firmaware upgrades.

Id3 new in mid-May, with new firware, and it's been superb. No Af issues shooting action sports, faster af lock on than my MkII, much better file to work with.

Not really, this has nothing to do with the nature or type of AF problem at all. Its a binary situation - do you have a problem with your AF or not?? Has your product let you down, one way or another. I am interested in any users that have had an AF problem with their MkIII.

This poll is not about the nature of the fault its about the design or build QA for the AF system on current 1 series camera and I dont see that as being an unreasonable question.

I have about 7500 Shutter actuations on mine now and I have to say that I just can't make myself go back to the MkII after using the MkIII. For the most part focus has been great in both speed and accuracy but I have had two occasions where the Camera would not focus at all. It seemed like the AF switch had accidentally moved to the MF position but it had not. This happened once with the 300mm f2.8 and again with the 100-400. I haven't been able to make it happen again but this never happened with my previous camera bodies. I was able to get the AF back working again by removing the lens, switching the camera off, removing battery and then reinstalling and turning back on. Everything worked fine after this and so far it has not happened again.

The menu layout, battery life, weight and ergonomics with the set button on the rear wheel plus the joystick like the D series as well as immediate access to the ISO button are other things that are much better than the MkII. The dust cleaning feature seems to work well and can be set to auto clean if you wish.

I have held on to my MkII because of all the negative news on the MkIII but I haven't used it since I received the new one. Mine is a Blue dot 556XXX NO.

Go ahead and get one and I think you will feel the same.

Grant

I have an early MKIII. I have noticed a slight difference in the number of keepers with the upgrades, but that may be attributed to experience rather than the performance of the camera. Sometimes it's difficult to say whether any problems I have had focussing are due to my own ineptitude or the camera's. Pride would say the latter. Leaving aside my pride, the fact that my focusing is improving would indicate that the fault is mine . . . but I'm happy to hear protestations in my defense!

Careful now, sentiments like this could easily make it into another poll!
