I noticed that there were several companies that make aftermarket batteries for the D3 and wanted to know which one was the best and also who has the highest mAh rating. Do you think I should just stick with the Nikon brand for the overall reputation.

Buy the Nikon battery for a few extra bucks and have a peace of mind (that's what I did). For saving 30-40 bucks ain't worth the risk.
Well 6 months ago I would have said knock offs all the way. but after managing one of the largest youth sports companies in socal I say go Nikon. We have over 150 Cameras and double that in batteries. We tried the knock off and there all dead and in the trash solely because they don't hold a charge...spend the cash get nikon
I never did understand that logic... buy a $5000 camera and then try to save $20 on a battery that may or may not work... if you can't afford a spare battery for a D3, you probably shouldn't be buying a D3 in the first place.
Many of the knock-off battery capacity ratings are inaccurate anyway.
