I reckon you'd be a good contender for one.

Nik, a sound assessment, IMHO. Probably I will get one, if it emerges from the rumour mill. Cheers, KL

correct, however, the D300 has some major advantage due to its 1.5x factor, and with the dame pixel definition a D300 will offer much more "muscle" (for zoom or tele primes), than a D700 FF.
I like the DX format as a 300mm becomes a great 450mm... ans I still do not see the davatage of Full frame with the current pixel definition sensors. If someone can explain it to me, in more details than, yes we are back to the silver 24x36 format, it would be great

Hello linathael

I agree that DX is great for telephoto lenses, absolutely. However if you are a wideangle photographer then DX really, really sucks. For example, my beautiful Nikkor 28mm becomes a 42mm equivalent, and my 24mm becomes (on my Canon) a 38mm. Not wide at all.

Yes, I know that you can buy specialist DX wides, but they are all slow. Even the superduper new Tokina 11-16 is "only" 2.8, I personally could have taken DX more seriously if either Canon or Nikon had ever released a fast wide, for example a 19mm f1.4

The fact that such lenses never appears tells me that Nikon and Canon were never that committed to DX, in the long term.

Well.. if D700 come true I'm gonna buy one as 90% of my lens are FX and I also want wider photos with 28mm and my 35-70mm (that I love but the range isn't that good for DX format).

The most important thing. It'll be a replace for my D70 as my D200 will still be in my backpack for sport and wildlife photos (as some have commented here, DX have some advantages).

Most countries aren't. In Canada our $ is finally par with the USD, we've been waiting for news like this for a long time!

Actually I'm a canon shooter. Looking to see what options I have to upgrade/replace my Rebel XT. What a difference 2 years makes, Nikon couldn't get anything right post-D70, now Canon is still hocking bodies with minor improvements from technology I was looking at 3 years ago.

Hello David, thanks for the comment, I better understand now, and I agree to have already experienced similar frustration already with my 18-70mm, not wide enough indeed... but as I more a wild and normal life shooter, I might be less affected than others.
I wanted to bring the point about pixel numbering, as a 12 MP FF will bing less definition than a 12 MP DX, so indeed if you want it wide you want it FX, but if you want it zoomed and.or detailed you want it DX.

Let see what nikon can grab from ts black hat, all things I know is that there is a special discount campaign on Canon 40D and other bodies and lenses ending on June 30th...

I've been one of those that has just been viewing this thread as I really thought it was a hoax....but very intrigued "just in case".

Right now I have been using a D300 as my main body and a D200 as a secondary body. I shoot mainly sports and like the DX factor for that reason, but my second body is mainly used for wide angle shots where I don't need the DX crop factor. The thought of a Nikon FF camera really intrigues me. My neighbor photographer shoots with a 5D and the images are super nice (not sure of the glass she is using though). I'm keeping in mind that I could use the D300 as my primary sports body and the D700 as a wide angle body as well as portrait type work - best of both worlds.

I just took a look at my glass and the only DX lenses I own are the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 10.5x fisheye. I don't think I would take too much of a hit replaceing these lense with the non DX counterparts. Im just going to wait until the D700 specs are released and see if it makes more sence then looking at a used D3.

Michael

Hope this is comes soon, I'd love a smaller brother to my D3. I would much prefer a SBFX to add to my lineup than another D3. Save money and space.

Doesn't look like Nikon is going to announce anything, or they are really tight lipped. I'm guessing the 1st Jul announcement is the Canon 5d replacement which is coming September.

According to one of the major danish dealers it is now official that Nikon will meet the press the 1st of July.
Still nothing official from Nikon about what will be announced.
I hope it's some fast or just semifast AF-S primes with superb wide open performance, and a new AF-S 4/300 VR ...

Not only this. Full frame sensors receive more light for any aperture. So, given a sensor technology, it is easier to get high IQ especially in high ISO for full frame.

Guaranteed the 5DII will be no more than the current 5D, and I'm sure it will be close in many ways to what Nikon will put out. Current 5D prices are around $2300, from what I've been seeing.

Actually current 5D prices are between $1800-1900USD and around $2600 WITH the nice 24-105/4 L IS Lens.

I think we are also going to be seeing rising prices with fuel and food increases causing inflation.

And that the D700 will compete with the 5DII which may also come in a bit higher than the current 5D prices.

These guys are just copying what is already here in an FX chip, so it's the blatantly obvious. The problem with these specs and all the others.... no frame rate.
