p.1 #1 · External hard drive

My 500 GB external hard drive is just about full of scanned slides and raw files; for the last several years, I've been shooting has been exclusively digital. I need to upgrade for more space. An IT professional in my office has recommended the 2.0TB OWC Mercury Elite-AL PRO 800 RAID Dual SATA Drive; the price I'm seeing is $599.00. Anybody have experience with this piece of equipment? Other suggestions?

Thanks.

It sounds as if this is an enclosure for "RAID 0" that give no "Parity" protection against HD failure. Since the, present, upper limit of SATA HDs is 1TB this would, logically, combine two drives for @TB of storage capacity. It may or may not have the drives included in the price.

The security of your data is totally dependent on the reliability of the HDs. So check out what brand of drives are used. Also take some time to explore RAID configurations and backup schemes since that is a lot of data to have unprotected. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
