p.1 #1 · All you selling D300s are fools

...ok that's too strong, but it got your attention!

I've owned *every* Canon DSLR save the mkIII series, and also a D1X, D200 and D2X, and the D300 is by far the best camera I've ever had!

What?!? What about the 1DsMkII?? Great camera, heavy as crap, painful ergos, missed shots because of it.

What about the 5D?? Great image quality, but pretty much a 30D with a big sensor and no pop up flash. Canon has a very cynical view of anyone who is not a true pro shooter, thinking we'll fawn over features that are only implemented in a half-hearted way (cf, for example, the "weather sealing" on the 40D!).

Bu.. bu.. but there's the D3, dude! Yep, there sure is. But unless they figure out how to make it smaller, as they did when they did a D2X->D300 it won't be a "go anywhere camera" for me. It's great, but I can pull the grip off of my D300 and go indigenous without being noticed.

Ok, nuff said. Tom is very surprised he is this happy with a camera. Last time that happened was... a very long time ago!

Tom

I love mine. I like using it more than my D3 but I like my D3 for my lowlight receptions.

To quote a Seinfeld character talking about himself: "George is getting angry!"

As for 5D and 30D, well D3 has no pop flash either.

I've used both D3 and D300. D3 is my favorite camera because of its size. D300 w/ grip is my favorite "affordable" camera.

Good for you Tom, I don't think I've seen anyone this this happy about a camera in a long time. As long as you're happy we're all happy.

Nikon nailed it with this camera. Not much negative thing to say about the D300.

But I got the D2X instead, because I'm one of those who prefere the handling and feel of a built-in grip. The viewfinder is better on the D2X, especially with the Dk17m. And I hate internal flash, never had a need of it.

I like my D300. I'm not interested in a D3 due to FX format and cost. Yes, I know, I like DX format and I like the reach it gives me and the lighter less expensive bag.

I also know that choice is good. Other people swear by their cameras because those cameras work for them.

A D3 isn't a D300, it's ... different, pro different.
There is no rival for high ISO performance, though, than the D3. But I wouldn't walk around Disneyworld with one!

Great stuff... and I'm also a huge proponent and fan of the D300...

"Nikon nailed it with this camera"... couldn't agree more... offering just about everything anyone could have hoped for in a prosumer price point. Amazing. I have said it before... if it weren't for the D3 being near-simultaneously announced and released, we'd all be flabbergasted at what Nikon has accomplished here. Finally a DSLR that offers terrific high ISO results, speed to burn, an excellent pro AF system, and a great build quality. Really not a lot to nitpick, but hey, forums like this will always find something to pick...

Not to say the D3 isn't deserving of all the hype / praise... and for that matter, the competition has recently released some also very-deserving cameras... but kudos to Nikon for getting so much right this time around!

Tom,

To get attention you call people fools? Wow, how unnecessary.

Very enlightening thread. D300 and D3 owners love their cameras. Good to know.

I love my D300 for all the reasons stated plus one. On 1:1 macro 24 mm will the frame of a D300 while on Fx 1t will be 36 mm object to fill the frame. So higher res on macro. You may be able to do that in future on a D3x and crop but it will cost 4-5 times more. Advantge of shooting long teles is well known. Beware of people who measre quality/ performance by the price tag.

It is unquestionable that till the debut of those two cameras Nikon was not able to put its act together. Many photographers, especially wedding photographers, were lost to Canon simply because Nikon did not have a camera to perform well at high ISO shooting. I remember the expectations when Nikon announced the D2H with its new LBCAST sensor with its "improved noise performance." The D2X did not come close either.
Any of the "old" cameras are fine with me because I am not a high ISO shooter but if I had to depend on a camera that would give me excellent performance at high ISO I would go for a D3.
The D200 always impressed me with its excellent skin tonalities. I have not used a D300 so I cannot comment on its performance. The D3 I know is excellent.
Anyway, it is encouraging to know that Nikon finally ended the annoying noise at high ISO speeds and even more encouraging that soon the FX format will be available in more "affordable" cameras.
Now, where are those photographers selling their D300?

I think my D300 is great although it was a really close call between that and a 5D.
I have to admit I don't do a lot of long lens stuff so, full frame would be nice just to keep the wides wide!

I "almost" drank the cool aid and bailed on mine to get a 5D. I am SO happy that I didn't. The D300 has allowed me to get shots I would have never gotten with the 5D. I've since added a 17-55mm f/2.8 and couldn't be happier.

Nikon did a fantastic job with the feel of the MBD-10 and adding the directional pad was a masterpiece. I love the ability to go light for street shooting or adding the grip and ripping frames for sports. Love, love, love...

Good for you, but not everyone cares about small body factors, pop-up flashes etc. The D300 is an excellent camera, but if you think you can suddenly become invisible by taking the grip off, well...

And what is it about people wanting to be "invisible"?
