So i recently acquired a 16-35 II and quite frankly I love this lens. It is on my camera all the time.

I love the 35L as well, but I have a feeling that it will be used less and less due to this lens purchase (i also have the 24-70L).

Has anyone else that owns both experienced this? I hate to break up the holy trinity but am afriad i will not use the 35L that much.

I recently added the 35L to my lens collection, having owned the 16-35II since soon after its release. The two lenses serve different purposes for me, and I really wouldn't get rid of either.

I own the 16-35 MK1 and 35L, and the 35L gives you a two stop advantage, I use it for low light work, when 2.8 just isn't enough.

I have both, and quite frankly the 35L is in a class of its own. If I have something I specifically want to shoot at 35mm, then it is the 35L. Look at corners, color, contrast and sharpness, and if those are important, keep the 35L. For travel or walk around I might carry the 16-35, 24-205 and maybe the 100-400L, but if I want to do something special, its the 35L, 50 f/1.4 and the 85L.

Of course if you aren't really going to use the 35L, just kind of keep it around, sell it to someone who will value and use it.

So what is it that you're asking: trying to sell the lens (wrong forum, nice try bypassing the fee). You're not stating an actual question.

I have the 35L and use it far more than the 16-35 because it can shoot at 1.4, very well even, which matters indoors.

I have both, and am in your shoes. The 35L gets much less attention than it used to. The 16-35II is just such a wonderful lens.

That said, I still love the separation you can get with the 35L. When you're in a crowded low-light place there are few other options that work as well as the 35L. Museums, Indoor Car shows [I would even go for a 24L here], etc.

Many people that do not do photography as a living can not justify two expensive lenses that are somewhat similar and unfortunately have to decide which to keep to best suit their needs. I don't think the op is trying to bypass the buy and sell subscription. Most of the gear decision posts are very similar to the op's. The question is valid, for those owners of the 16-35, do they use their 35L less, any regrets about selling etc.

The 35L, however, is still my most used lens in my bag. Environmental portraits on the 5D with that delicious separation that only an ultra-large aperture can give you... the color!... the sheer beauty of that lens is second to none @ that focal length, IMO.

Oh, and of course I would much rather shoot at ISO800, f/1.4 than ISO3200 f/2.8 if light levels are a concern

I agree with everything here. I definitely think they're different lenses despite their overlap.

I don't think this guy is trying to bypass anything. I've been asking several questions over the past few weeks, and have mentioned many times that I'm going to be selling stuff. Not once was I trying to bypass a fee (as a matter of fact, I plan on signing up because the amount of gear I plan on selling, the 25$ is cheaper than the eBay fees).

To the OP's question, I'd look at it like this. There is a 16-35 in your bag, and a 35 in your bag. If using both of them, keep both. If you are using the 16-35, and find that you don't need the 35 anymore, I'd sell it.

I don't know what your money situation is, like if you are in need of the money that the 35 would bring. Or maybe you could put it on something else you want.

OP did ask a question. The first reply is where the idea of buying/selling came up.

OP - I agree that both have their own uses. I will jump through hoops to use a fast prime in dark interiors, and sometimes I just have no choice in the matter.

stanj you are completely off base with the bypass charge.

I am not in need of money. I just hate having gear that I do not use. and I love this 16-35II, and i am worried that i will not reach for the 35L enough to justify having it.

I was just wondering what other folks who have been in this position have done (assuming these people are out there). I was attempting to learn from other people and their experiences.

i'll probably hang onto it for a few months at least just to see what my needs really are.

I think he is asking whether is it worth keeping both 16-35mm and 35mm

I personally prefer the 35mm than 16-35mm, but if you need wider than 35mm and prefer primes, get either the 24mm 1.4 or 14mm 2.8.

i have both lenses and they are indeed very different lenses, even though they do overlap in the 35mm focal length. for me, the...

35L is a wide aperture WYSIWIG lens, mainly used in available light photography

16-35II is a wide angle, versatile zoom used for general purpose work

one is really wide angle, the other is really wide aperture.

I used to have both and now have just the prime.

I think people buy 35/1.4 when he/she needs f1.4 and 16-35II when he/she needs 16mm.
Which one do you need more??

I'm not sure which camera body you're using, but I've got the 24L and the 16-35II that I use with my 40D. I had the 24L for awhile before getting the 16-35, and I do find myself using the 16-35 the most now. The 16-35 is very versatile and f2.8 is fast enough for almost all settings. For dark indoor shots I bring out the 24L... it's probably the best low-light lens available.
