So if I purchased a Canon 16-35L II or a Canon 85L II and I had a bad copy and wanted an exchange I wouldn't lose any money minus shipping?

Paying extra can pay off when you consider 10% min anyway.

You forgot Adorama, and many others I am sure, that allow 14 day returns of full price less shipping.
