I think the subject on the first pair determines the use of black and white or color, and black and white makes more sense with the inclusion of the bench. The bench is really only interesting in black and white, giving the photograph an empty, "lonely place" feeling. That said, the composition and exposure doesn't do much for me either way.
I really like the second photo in the second pairing. Exposing for the sky was the right choice.
