This lion is about 5 yrs old. When an older male takes over the pride the younger males get thrown out of the pride to prevent inbreeding. This is one of the two brothers we found spending time together until they are ready to have their own pride.

We saw this lioness feasting on a zebra. There were many vehicles before me and I wasn’t in a position to get a decent shot of the feast. Disturbed by all of us she decided to walk away into the early morning sunrise when this picture was taken. Notice the blood on the face.

Females in Serengeti are ready to reproduce as early as two years of age. However in Uganda they may take several years before they can reproduce.

Mating pair is called honeymooners. They isolate themselves from the rest of the pride during the mating period. Copulation occurs every 15-45minutes for several days.

I saw 4 pairs of honeymooners during this trip. Above images are the only decent ones I got of mating due to the distance. This shot was soft due to heavy rain. By this time the front element of the lens was completely covered with rain drops and the light was getting bad. This shot had heavy contrast adjustments to bring out the details.

Litter of 2-3 are born after 110 days of gestation. If a new lion takes over a pride he will often kill younger cubs fathered by others. This mother had three cubs the day before. The next day only one was alive. It was thought that another lion killed the two cubs

Unlike leopards the lions are not known for climbing trees. As you have seen from Jay’s and my postings lions in a tree are not an unusual sight. This particular lion spent several hours on this tree. We saw her during the morning game drive. I spent about an hour trying to capture something other than a sleeping lion without any luck. On our evening drive she decided to wake up and come down. I used the flash and better beamer for this shot.

Harsha, I don't quite know where to start on these. I keep going back and looking at each one of them. You have captured some incredible wild shots here, some intense moments and the feel of the shots with the rain in incredible. Wow, just excellent for me. Favorites being....................most all of them

I've really enjoyed your posts thus far and these are no exception. They're getting me cranked up for my trip there this September. Conditions may not have been favorable for #8 but it oozes drama, a great wildlife shot.

Hmmmm. I don't think #14 looks like a happy face. I think she's had enough of the paparazzi!! Another fun series, Harsha. Where did you see your lions in trees? Were these in the crater? We saw them up in trees in the Seronera and Ndutu parts of the Serengeti, but none in the crater.

#2 is the best of the bunch, though. That one belongs on a wall.

I am amazed with your Serengeti collection Harsha. So many excellent keepers you are having. Every post regarding your African trip keeps getting better. All shots are very, very nicely captured and processed.
