I'll start buy saying that I bought a 1D mkI for $7700 and sold it 3 years later for $1700.

Whats been you biggest loss on a digital body especially interested in those who produce no income from their gear.

Really a non-issue as I got my money's worth in enjoyment and images. Nothing new here. Almost everything in life depreciates: cars, motorcycles, girl friends, clothing, jewelry, homes, audio gear, USA dollar, even you...

Interesting Poll. Now I don't feel so bad selling my mint 6 month old 5D for 1700 when I originally paid 2650.

This is a good reminder for me to not jump the gun on the upcoming 5D2 if it's > $2,500.

Why anyone would sell a 5D is beyond me (except maybe foreclosure threat).

I've lost $0 on my camera purchases. I've gotten about 10 times the value of the purchase price.

Since I buy used or discontinued closeout gear I don't lose $$$...actually I'm ahead of the game...
...best deal: got an XT/kit/75-300 setup at a pawnshop and sold the lenses for $50 more than I paid, and still have the XT bod

Or you could look at it from the investors stand-point. How much has that particular body and lens set up made for you?

I don't doubt that there are many people on here who make alot of money from their gear. When I was a track photographer and kart photographer I pulled about 150K profit over a 4-5 year period.

But this opens the eyes of people who think that they need the best gear to do what they do but make no money from it.

I will find it hard to justify spending more than about $1000 on any digital in the future "if" I go back to digital. I make no money from photography any more and have no desire to do so.

I am happy to be a weekend warrior an dwill be hard pressed to shoot more than 50 rolls a year tops.

I made 20-30x what my gear cost me before expenses, I was not concerned about depreciation during that period, but looking forward no way can I justify spending the dollars asked for todays releases.

I've lost £0 on selling digital SLR bodies currently as i've yet to actually sell one.

I still own the three that i've bought!

My 10D cost me £1600 and it is now worth about £200.
My 1dmkii i paid i think £2500 for and it is now worth about £800-1000.
My 400d i paid £450 and it probably worth about £200.

So if i sold my kit i'd lose probably lose £3350 which is around $6500!

But that's if i sell it, all my kit works fantastically still so it'll stay for a good while longer.

Chris

Bought a Nikon D200 for 1600,00 euros, sold it for 975,00 euros

Bought a mint Canon EOS 3 + PB-E2 for 250,00 euros

You win some, you loose some...

Doesn't really matter. In the end it is cheaper than racing or women.

Would someone please try that line on their wife to see if it works before I try?

Interesting. I keep an excel file of all my purchases / sales. Kinda scary btw

The most I have lost so far is on a D60. I purchased it used for $1000. Two months after that I had Canon replace the shutter - thank you eBay - for $350 and I sold it when I got my 20D for $650. Loss = $700.

I purchased my 20D when it was in the current lineup for $1950. If I was to sell it now what would I get? $500 at most?

I have now a 1D MKII but I am keeping the 20D. Not only for backup but because its sale would considerably hurt my stats!

Money-wise, I lost about $3,000 and $4,200 as a result of switching 1Ds to 1Ds MarkII and switching 1Ds MarkII to 1Ds Mark III. Each roughly during a period of shorter than 3 years or so but the enjoyment I experienced with each body.... priceless. No, I didn't charge it, BTW .

I think one should see the "loss" as a normal thing associated to using a camera. Even a loss 0f $3,600 over a 3 year period is only $100 per month. If this is your job or your main hobby, it is easily justifiable (golf anyone?)

No foreclosure here......but I did get a brand new, blue dot Mark lll, that works perfectly, for 25% off list

I can't really count it a loss sold a 3 year old 20d for $500 less than I paid for it. I shot weddings portraits and school events with it so it gained me money, which I spent on my business.

I've yet to loose a penny selling camera equipment.

My first was a 300D. Payed $1000
I sold it to the insurance company for $1000 when I broke it two years later.

Then I purchased a used 300D for $400. I sold that one to the insurance company (again for $1000) a year later when my entire kit was stolen.

I was able to replace my other stolen equipment for $1000 less than the insurance payout. I then purchased a 5D for $3300. So after I subtract the $600 profit on the 300D, and the $1000 profit on the rest of my kit. The 5D only cost me $1700.

If I were to sell my 5D today it would fetch ~1500. After 3 years with a 300D and 2.5 years with a 5D, I have only lost $200 to depreciation.

But over that same time period I spent $350 on insurance. So if I were to sell my entire kit now (assuming there is no depreciation on my lenses, most of which were purchased used) I would have lost $550 over 5.5 years or about $100 a year. Not too bad.

I've only sold one body. Bought a 300D for $699 and sold it two and a half years later for $300. Not bad, given the huge leaps that were made in that time frame.

Starter with a RebelXT and Kit lens. Now I shoot with a $4000 Mkiii. I make zippy in photo income and most of my pics sit on my 1TB WD harddrive. My biggest purchase was a 400 f/2.8 IS for $6K!

Why...just for the love of the art.

I never lost more than $200 dollars on selling my bodies. The most I lost was when I sold my 5D. Purchased it for $2000 from Dell and sold it for $1800 a year later. $200 dollars well worth it!
