p.1 #1 · New and improved 100-400!

My current walkaround lens for the 40D is 24-105L, love the setup and it cover most of my shooting. But I needed a longer reach for one of those special occation at the zoo, park, outdoor sports and whatnot. I had a very sharp 70-200 F4 IS last year but sold it because it didn't see much action. This time around I thought about getting another 70-200 F4 IS, but then sometime I found 200mm ain't long enough because I also like to shoot some backyard birds and stuff like that.

I did some research for few weeks and came across some unpleasant stories about how the 100-400L were often soft in the long end, I was warned that the 100-400L needed to stop down to F8 or F11 to gain some sharpness, and the optic is inferior to that of the 400 5.6 prime. I'm not impressed by the MTF result of this zoom lens from photozone either. But then I also saw a couple people on other forums reported that their copies are very sharp even at wide open, and was told that the recent production of this lens may be improved quietly by Canon. Although I was skeptical and can't find enough posts to support their claim, but I really like the idea of having a zoom, and the IS is useful for handheld shots, so I decided to take my chance and ordered one from Amazon with overnight shipping yesterday morning, they have the best price that I have found so far.

Well, I got my new toy today the size and weight reminds me of the 70-200 2.8 IS I once had, kinda hefty, no complaint with the push/pull zoom either. I took it out for a quick spin, So far I'm very happy with the optic quality of this lens, I'm a very demanding person and have a bad habit of pixel-peeping at 200~300%. But the result I get is much sharper than I had expected, stopping down to f/8 only gain me better DOF so I'll be using this lens wide open most of the time. Contrast and color are very nice....typical L quality, IS work as advertised, not as good as 70-200 F4.0 IS but nevertheless it's 2-stops better than nothing.

The lowest shutter speed I'm willing to handheld at 400mm is around 1/350, keeper rate almost cut in half when I go lower. Though the AF speed is slower than my 24-105 and both 70-200 2.8/4.0 IS that I had, other than that I don't have much to complaint about. So, could this lens be the "new and improved" version of 100-400L that some people talked about recently? I notice a few minor changes on my copy comparing to those that I saw awhile back, the switches are flat, and they label the IS to On and OFF instead of O and I, and there are a few logos on the lens (CE, a recycle looking round arrow with 10 inside, etc.) Build date on mine is UW0217 (Feb 2008), brand spanking new! lol

I'm on the third 100-400, and not yet the newest cosmetic version. Canon put the crappy switches on the newer lenses to prevent klutzes from accidentally changing settings. Unfortunately this makes it very difficult for changing settings without naked and strong skin on the fingers.

I have had mine for about 1-1/2 years and couldn't be happier. Nice range and the IS works pretty well for an older generation.

I've had mine for 4 years and i'm still happy with it.

Mine's an oldy tho! Old switches and it's beaten to hell but it's sharp and delivers when i ask it to!

Great lens.

All pictures are handheld, Center point focus, converted from RAW to JPG with DDP that came with my 40D, zero post processing, I use the standard picture style profile (0 color tone, 0 saturation, and 3 sharpness). I'm very impressed with the sharpness of this lens, base on so much detail can be obtain wide open at 400mm, I think it has the potential to do some decent backyard birding

p.1 #15 · New and improved 100-400!

Based on online chatter, I purchased a 300/4 IS L when moving up from the 70-200L. My impression was that the 100-400L was soft at 400mm wide open and the push-pull thing seemed rather awkward. I was happy with the 300/4 but did find there were times that I missed shots of targets that were unexpectedly too close. One day I found a 100-400L refurb at my local dealer and they let me give it a try. I was favorably impressed with the lens, bought it, and it's been my most used lens ever since. I quickly adapted to the push-pull design and now find it preferable. Maybe earlier copies had problems but mine is a UT date code and it's outstanding wide open at 400mm. I see no difference in sharpness between f/5.6 and f/8. I've seen the many debates here on the merits of the 100-400 vs the 400L. I have also tried the 400L and it's also superb but I do find the 100-400 better suits my needs for hand held applications.

One of the advantages of the B&S board is that you can buy used at a reasonable price and decide for yourself what works best for you. Don't overpay and you can try out the equipment for little more than the cost of shipping.

I find the header suggestive. There is no new or improved 100-400. This lens has always been as good as it is. Congrats anyway!

The main difference in IQ between the above mentioned 300/4.0 and 400/5.6 prime with this zoom are bokeh quality and macro contrast. Also colour is slightly different. A typical characteristic of the 100-400L is it's below par bokeh which shows in one of the OT poster's pictures in the treebrenches in front of/above the car. They don't show soft or smooth, but a little 'wild' to the eyes. Also shadows tend to a blue/cyan cast stronger than they would have done in one of the primes. Shadows would show more open in the primes especially in the 300/4.0IS. The 400/5.6 is famous for it's extreme fast AF and the compact size which is a great thing for shooters of BIF and other fast moving subjects.

This all is not a big thing and something that is easily forgiven taken all the other qualities of this all-round telezoom. But I just wanted to point it out as there is a reason why there are other lenses in Canon's line up as an alternative with their own qualities. This is probably also the reason why Canon hasn't changed or improved the 100-400IS for a long time. This lens has it's place in the line up as good as it is for a decade now. Have EOSfun!

Truer words were never said, Steve! The downside's when ya end up keeping most of it.
OP: looks like a great copy, happy shootin'!

I am getting mine next week in New York, and I am already planning a trip to the Bronx zoo the following day! I cannot wait. Before that I tried one from a FM member leaving in Paris and was really impressed, here are a 100% crop from my test of the lens, 5D, 400mm f/5.6, some sharpening, EXIF included.

My US dated 100-400L is tack sharp wide open @ 400mm. it's an excellent lens

Here's a 100% crop of the top of crane structure that was around 100m ~ 330' away. It's a handheld f/5.6 shot @ 400mm. Notice the pressure gauge which is around 6" in diameter. You can see almost make out the scale on the gauge face.
