p.1 #1 · 300mm does wrestling

Shots some Wrestling tonight. My back was sore so I didn't feel like sitting mat side. I pulled out the 300, went up in the bleachers, and had a go at it.

1 FINALLY had a ref that knows how to call a pin

I love the angle but I'm not a fan of the lighting. The camera it getting fooled by all the light coming back off the mat. I think this would have working better if your where bouncing the light and having it fall down on the subject vs it shooting right at them.

I think you are on to a neat idea just need to work on getting the light to be more even.

I was thinking the same thing, the lighting just doesn't do it for me. Just doesn't seem even enough. Was this on camera flash? If so figure its a long distance to flash.

yeah its a 550 on camera. I was actually going for the bounce up. it was too far to bounce off ceiling (angle loss). I had a flash extender on. Think snoot if you read the strobist blogspot. Some of the extremities are a little hot but I think the faces are exposed right. (still having some calibration uncertainties). Most of them are full frame cropping a few just a wee bit. The 300 is so nice but its so hard to work it into the winter sports season. (at least in the small high school gym in my area) Baseball here yet?

To throw another twist, you ever think of setting the flash off camera on a stand and triggering it with pocket wizards? The quality of light just changes so much (for the better) when set strobe off camera. Wizards aren't cheap, but I've never regretted getting/using them.
