I'm really sorry to say this, but this does not say hate to me. It says Coffee or Black or Start and Finish, but not Hate.
It is a great image, sharp well lit, composed, but I don't get how it fits the assignment. I could post the same thing in several other entries for this MA but haven't. I have seen your previous entries in the WA and MA and admired them, especially "A Child's Perspective", but this one I just don't get. Sorry.

I guess, I choose a more personal form of hate that may not translate to others. I see this and it speaks dislike/hate to me...but, I understand that it may not apparent to others...unless of course, you hate coffee as well. Unfortunetely, the only things that really communicate hate in photography are violence, religion and discriminating...and that's really not what I shoot.
I'm glad you took this in the spirit it was meant.
This is a tough MA to depict Hate, personally I love coffee and drink far too much of it but that had no influence on my comments. You probably wasted that cup, I would have drunk it!!
I could be far more critical of some of the other entries in this MA, but surely its obvious. Am I the only person seeing it or am I the only person willing to say it?
I understand your feelings about not wanting to shoot certain things. I was the same. I shot my entry and waited until everyone else had gone to bed in my house before I processed it and then I added a warning before posting it. Personally I don't find my entry offensive but I am very aware that others might
As you said, arguably, only violence or discrimination depict hate (I will leave religion out of this) in your opinion, but this is a photographic assignment and surely it must be judged on what the individual (or Judge) sees when they look at an image related to the assignment. Regardless of how good the shot is, does it convey the assignment? Quite often in the Wa & MA I feel it does not, but no one ever criticises, it is all praise and good luck. Occasionally there is constructive criticism but not often. This forum is about learning, we need less slaps on the back and more home truths. I love your image but it won't get my vote for this MA.

I'm not saying disqualify yourself, far from it. I was just giving my opinion on not just this Image but this MA in general. Its your opinion that counts with this shot, its your work not mine and if you are happy that it conveys your message then stick to your guns.
