The camera is still very new to me, and it is going to take me a while to learn how to take advantage of bad light situations. I would have normally gone home with the D2x under these conditions. Instead, the D3 made easy work of the poor light. The dynamic range from the camera is quite impressive. With some practice, and working on my technique, I am going to love this camera. Photos were processed in NX with a SLIGHT USM applied. Then off to CS2 for some cropping, if needed, and a levels adjustment. All shot hand hel with the D3, 300 2.8 AF-S, and the 2.0TC. I did use a borrowed padded monopod (unextended) to allow me to hold the setup easier.

Some nice shots. Using a monopod is not hand-held.

Since you have deleted the EXIF, what ISO were you using?

I edited my post to say that the monopod was not extended. A friend uses this setup and he uses it with his Canon and 500mm lens.The monopod, IMO, allows you to balance the load much easier. ISO ranged from 1600 to 3200.

Some nice shots there. How did the shots from friday turn out, with the perfect weather? Looks like you'll do very well with the D3

I am almost done processing those. For some reason, I did these first and I don't know why. I'll post them soon. I almost went back today, until the wife gave me "the look". I am still looking for my first fishing shot. I always seem to be in the wrong spot at each opportunity.

Great series and impressive iso performence. I tried mine today at Mississippi river near Dubuque. Unfortunately the river is almost completely frozen and the open water was far away.
