Hi folks, need a cable about 20+ feet long to connect the camera to a PC, shooting Canon 1D series bodies...any suggestions? Also DPP is the program to use? Thanks!
I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a tangential question: when shooting tethered through EOS Utility, it either opens up Zoombrowser or DPP to display my shots. But it always displays them as the extra large thumbnail size. Is there any way to make them come up as full screen w/o having to go over the the computer and double click?

Yes, I remember seeing that somewhere in the menus as an option to change the size.
the option in question is only when double clicking on the image whether to fit, 100 or 200%
But, you can also set the linked software to none (eos utility preferences), then use Lightroom or some other program with a Watch folder feature (Photo Mechanic) and just work off that.
There is other software you can shoot tethered with, but it's not free.
There is a preview window that comes up (part of EOS i beleive) and you can resize it all the way to full screen if you want.
I just got an EyeFi card yesterday and if all you need to move is JPGs you might want to look into it. You'll need a wireless network or at least the wireless router so the whole cost can run upwards of $175 (eye fi, CF adapter, router), but the eyefi dumps it into a directory on the computer, and no more rotation issues like you get shooting tethered.
It's not a perfect solution either, but it's $800+ cheaper than canon's wireless adapter.
I've downloaded all the latest drivers for my 5D, and have firmware 1.1.1. Also have switched "communication" on camera menu to PC. I still can not get my WinXP desktop to see my camera. Any hints? Thanks.
I had some issues on a mac with the 5D too. If I remember the camera had to be turned off when you connected, then turned on, then menu displayed and then menu turned off before the software would recognize the camera. Somehow the computer thinks the camera is displaying the menu on start up and won't connect until you can turn it off, which you can't do until it is displayed. It's a EOS Utility issue.
I might not have sequence exact because I have been tethering with Aperture 2.0 which has been flawless (and thankfully faster than 1.0).
Try a search too. I think it was dcains that helped me out before.
thanks for your input Carmen. Tried your idea but it didn't work. I found out if my camera communication menu is set to Print instead of PC, my laptop will see it. However, when I tried to go to remote shooting, it told me to set the camera communication to PC. If I do that, and turn the camera on, the laptop does not see it, and ask for the location of the drivers. Tried to point it to various Canon directories, but nothing worked.
I use DSLR Remote Pro from Breeze Systems with a 15' USB cable plus a 12' USB extension and it works flawlessly with my XXD Canon Cameras. Its great for food, arcitectural, and studio fashion work.
Earlier you said

I have the Eye-Fi unit and its finally working (another story !) so I can wirelessly send my jpgs to a folder on my Mac Desktop.
I have PM but I can't figure out how to automatically update/display the images
You mentioned a "Watch folder feature" Could you explain
John,
My 5D has a mini-USB port and a mini-plug port, no firewire ports. My laptop has the standard large flat USB port and a 4-pin firewire port. I did not think they made a cable having a mini-USB on one end and a firewire on the other end. How did you connect yours?
5d is like the consumer bodies and uses USB for everything. The 1 series (at least the older ones, not sure about the mod3's) have a firewire port as well as a usb port. Your 5D will communicate via USB
I really did not care for Canon's DPP software but need to shoot tethered from 1Ds2 to Mac. After reading Death to Film's blog I went with LR 1.4 and simply use EOS Utility to communicate to the computer. They also give a link for firewire repeaters which may come in handy. They are digital techs based in LA and ran a test between Capture One and LR and the LR processed images looked great compared to C1. BTW, I found a great backup to the Canon cable at Micro Center. It's a 25' firewire cable which was $35.
Can someone tell me where I can purchase the little round plastic thing that screws int the tripod thread and which secures a firewire cable to the Canon camera so a long cable doesn't pull out?
