p.1 #1 · Lens Choices Please Help

I just found out that I'm going to be going down to Yellowstone next weekend for a snowmobile trip through the park. One of the mornings will be a sunrise wildlife trip and I'm hoping that we get to see some wolves. I'm going to have to rent a lens and was wondering if I should get the 100-400 or the 70-200. I was thinking the 200 wouldn't be enough length to get close enough, but I've heard the 100-400 isn't that sharp. Thanks for any light you can shed on my predicament.

I'm not a Canon owner, but I'm thinking about being one. I have been keeping track of Canon experiences, and have heard first-hand tales of woe about the 100-400 from people who happened to get a bad one, but not all are bad. On the other hand, I have seen many top-notch wildlife photos taken with the 400 f5.6, and I haven't heard any complaints about that lens.

Since your going to "rent" one........get the 70-200 2.8 and a 2X TC

that way you have the best of both worlds......a zoom and up to 400 mm

We took a "wolf tour" at Yellowstone 2 years ago and I rented a 500 f/4. Best investment I ever made. I used it with the 1.4x and sometimes the 2x extender. My 100-400 would have been useless. Of course, for bison and elk, the 100-400 was fine. Also used the 500 +1.4x for river otters and eagles. We were in vans on the road and in snow coaches off road, so carrying the big glass was not a problem.
