I was at my local field, KEIK, this morning, having the Remos washed by a couple of young women pilots raising money for their expenses in the upcoming All Women's Transcontinental Air Race. All of a sudden, the ramp rats started pointing at the sky, and what should appear overhead but the B-17 Memphis Belle. All I had was the 70-200 and just time enough to raise the camera and fire off a few frames before she disappeared behind the hangars. Very cool: I didn't realize she was in town for the holiday weekend. I doubt I'll have time to get over to KBJC to see her up close; my chorus is singing at the dedication of the Colorado Freedom Memorial tomorrow and the Belle will only be here one more day.
The two young pilots are 22 and 27, respectively; each has already earned more ratings than you can shake a stick at, and have made a good start toward an aviation career. Good on 'em.
