Guys...

If I may ask a question, out of your experiences, for an inside-airport photography and airshows, is it 500mm f4, 400mm f2.8, or 100-400? I already have 120-300 with 1.4x and I am looking for another lens.

Chuck just emailed me with these, he thought you might enjoy them. I thought the gear door problem he navigated so ably was amazing, this tops that. If something goes south, I want to be flying with Chuck!

I don't know what that is in the foreground on the road, but I know what it would have been if I'd been flying that 51.......

I know a lot of people who shoot airshows with the 500 f/4 and many more who use the 100-400. Not aware of anyone who uses the 400 f/2.8, probably because extra reach is more bang for the buck than maximum aperture at an airshow.

Under the heading of, "What a stick....!" My friend Chuck Gardner once again kept his cool and put all of his warbird hours out there where they were needed. The Brat III shelled and engine over New Mexico, but when all the dust settled, through Chuck's expertise, the airplane was unscathed. Sitting in the middle of nowhere, but unscathed. This guy is just flat out good.

And calm, we have had a few times in the T-6 and he is like the fuzzy headed painter on Ch. 9 painting, ok, now lets add a little rudder now, roll the plane level now, nice, ok. Just don't get 6" off center line while landing, the calm goes away...

He is a great stick and good friend...

Thank you Stevez for your reply, so based on your suggestion, if I can go ahead with a 500 f4 it would be beneficial more than a 400 f2.8 even with a 1.4x (560 f4)?

Right, any recommendations for hotels in Ft.Worth for Fri-Sun?

I was afraid you'd say 24-70. I've been trying to avoid that obvious $ choice since getting the D4.

Erich

I'm sure you know this, but don't forget that the 17-55 is equivalent to 25-82 on a full frame.

Pretty cool photos from Chuck - Jim. I'm glad he and his plane are OK !

He is out there ...... but what's really neat in that second photo is the Country Light House -- it has it's head !! That's rare but because of the isolation of this farm the well is probably essential !

I don't have any experience shooting the 400 f/2.8, either with or without the 1.4x; all I can tell you is that the 500 f/4 is a hell of a lens and that I don't recall seeing anyone using the 400 f/2.8 at an airshow. Maybe the front-weighted balance (big objective glass) is awkward for hand-holding?

Thanks.

I was at Pylon 5. It's a lottery pylon and it's one of the normal spots so you have to take the opportunity when you're name is drawn. It has the best light of the whole course.
