Last night, as I was going through some of our Christmas pictures, I had a little voice inside my head griping about how my little Nikon 1 camera doesn't have the same IQ as I'm used to seeing from my D3x and D800 bodies. Then I suddenly realized that the little Nikon 1 outguns the Nikon D200 DSLR I took to Africa in 2007 in every single way. And some of the best images I've ever captured came from that trip.
In fact, apart from a 2MP handicap, the little 1 probably matches or beats my 2008-2010 primary body (D300) too, and that's my all-time favorite action body. Obviously the ergonomics, layout, and buttons/levers of a DSLR are an advantage in and of themselves. But in image quality, video, high-ISO performance, AF speed and accuracy, even frame rate... it's a contender. Put the guts of my V1 into a D300 shell, and you'd have a very real and capable action camera.
Good Lord, how quickly things evolve.
