Hi Lil, and welcome to the forum. These are really nice shots well in focus, and with sharp detail. The DOF looks fine, even if, I see, you like to shoot in shutter priority. The WB of the first female shot looks a bit off on my monitor, while the colors in the second female shot look more natural.
I belive your ID is correct.
Overall you did a very good job and I'm looking forward to see more images posted from you.

and only third at FredMiranda.com - - I tried to post these last night, but there was some system problem - so I try again....

I've been dividing my time in between the D200 & the D300 since the D300 arrived...... Nikon that is.

Not easy, but I try to not be biased. A good mother is not - - she loves her babies equally..... ;-)

Anyhow, about a week ago I had a meltdown & the other day I had a bad headache day, but a bit of a fun photography day... They're nothing tremendous, but I've been trying to shoot some of the little birds in our backyard for weeks. Finally I broke down & set up my make sift blind in the kitchen door. I hung my camouflage material in the doorway. I cut a slit in it for the lens to peekaboo though. Set the old D200 on my tripod, with my cheap Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 & last but not least - - refilled the feeder & waited...

I would appreciate some feedback on them. I'm playing in Capture NX & may be doing so a tad too much - - so some thoughts & recommendations would be most appreciated. Also, I'm not 100% sure of the first bird's species so if anyone can help me identify the little guy, I'd be most appreciative. I believe them to be "Lesser Goldfinch" of the Western variety since I live in Los Angeles & they are small, about 4 inches + (about 11cm).

My verdict is still out on this Tamron lens. Sometimes it feels soft, other times not. Sometimes High Pass seems so appropriate, other times not. Some shots cropped up to 50% & it was really horrid dark light due to rains...
To wet your appetite a few are posted here, the rest can be seen in my gallery at Zenfolio....

Oh, just a few things .... I posted these in the Nikon forum & someone recommended I'd post here & that I'd remove the frames. So I'm posting a few of each. As the pp'ing is done over different days I tend to pp as I see it at the moment - - pp'ing will therefore not match.... Also, crops are about 50% - give or take....

Hi Lil,

They look fine to me and I agree with the Lesser GF Id, too. The sharpness looks good and about the only thing you didn't have working for you is the light. I live south of you about 30 miles and saw a couple of LGFs today feeding on a berry bush. Glad to have something around to shoot

Hi Socrate,

thank you for welcoming me. I shot these shutter priority. I adjust that based upon what I want & need. There are times I want speed, then I set my shutter accordingly. Was not going to allow for OOF shots due to movement & these little guys are fast.

WB was probably my fault in pp, as I leave that on Auto in camera. Very easily adjusted in RAW & in NX - - more convenient for me so far. It's actually the same shot of the same bird. Just different pp'ing. Has to do with the frams some did not like in the Nikon forum.

Hi Ken, no I did not have light. But you know how it goes - when the bird's available you have to shoot it or forget it. Since you must be down towards Orange County you know what kind of weather we've been having this week. Not much I could do about the rain I'm afraid.

Didn't see them today & today I had light, but cold & too much wind. But that So California weather - extremes.

Hi Lil,

I think these look great. You may tweek some things as you go along but they are sharp, well saturated and composed nicely. I think you know what you're doing.
