That is the same load as posting externally hosted images. The user's browser does the work of downloading the images from the relevant server.

It's not the same as members would open thumbnails individually instead of for example going to page "225" and seeing 8 images or more at once. There is a big difference here.

That's actually not a bad proposal, but can we add commenting to that? We need to be telling people what lenses we've used, and we also need space to pat each other on the back.

That's actually not a bad proposal, but can we add commenting to that? We need to be telling people what lenses we've used, and we also need space to pat each other on the back.

If someone decides to post an image on this board, on the subject line, something needs to be added. For example:
AIT: my image

So, all threads with the word "AIT" on the subject line would contain an image that would be transformed into a thumbnail and added to the thumbnail page. Once members browse the thumbnail page and like that particular image, they would be able to click on it and go to the thread in question. (And post comments, find out which gear was used, etc...)
Too complicated?

Fred, thanks for working with us on an alternative! But I most admit I'm still bewildered that a link to an image on an external host requires bandwidth on you server, aside from the URL link text.

So I click to open page 225 and it has a post with a link embedded in it as ttp:www.teamsk.org/photo/1.jpg (no h in this example so it will just show as text). We have a dedicated code on this forum that "open" images once members post their URL addresses. Instead of only showing links.
It's a nice feature but involves a server hit. It's not something that would break the server, unless we have a thread with over 2,400 images...That is the problem here. Also, a large number of these images are hosted by FM and that aggravates the issue even further.

Sorry for being dense but I'm still confused. A 'hit' implies something along the lines of a fixed amount of code being transferred for the 'open' operation for each image. Wouldn't this be the same chunk of code for a thumbnail as for a larger jpg?

For the thumbnail solution to cut bandwidth - a page full of thumbnails (as in the example you provided) must only transfer the code once for all of them or ?

Is there a way to link directly to the gallery itself without starting a new thread? Also, can we add a caption to each gallery image? At the very least, I want to see what lens is being used on the gallery thumbnail page.

If a "sub-forum" was created just for these images (as there is a dedicated forum for WA and MA) then they would not clutter the main Alt. forum at all. It would be organized just like MA and WA. I see where Fred it going with this.

To have a place to post the images in a dedicated thread would allow you to receive comments and feedback, discuss lenses, etc. all in the same thread. Terrific idea, I'd say.

I think the core of the AIT thread has lost its original intention anyway. I thought it was a thread where someone would get a new lens/body and post a few pics from it. Or they might post some additional pics occasionally, usually with a different subject, light, atmosphere.

Lately it seems to have become more of a photo posting thread, that has little to do with showing someones latest new alternative test. Seems the users that are posting regularly for general photo sharing are FM host members. I can think of one lens that has close to 100 posting with similar subjects, light, and atmosphere, posted by the same person. Actions like that are what I think is kiliing the thread.

Fred, why not admit the real problem are your own paid members? I know when my host is down I don't see squat I've posted on your site.

The thumbnail page is not live. It gets updated after a determined amount of time. That is how it could help. However, at the end it may not help much. It was just a suggestion since another issue with the “AIT” is functionality. It’s hard to find an image on a 300 page thread!

With the thumb page, it would be easy to browse through images. I will put more thought into it though.

Sounds like your talking about an Alt Presentation Board with a gallery link to the Alt Forum? I thought the whole idea was to keep everything in the same forum. That is, new threads would open as normal, and the AIT Gallery tacked to the top of the forum page would go directly to the gallery, where we could upload pics. But if we need an AIT: tag every time, the Alt Forum is going to get cluttered, like trying to find a WTB thread in the quagmire of FS threads on the B&S board. Or did I misunderstand?

Or, what about a "monthly" Alt. Image thread, with the thumbs, individual threads for comments, etc. and a way for members to vote for an image. It could be theme-based, or not, but it would be nice to work the Alt. angle a bit and have people describe the hardware setup and explain how that particular alternative lens offered them something unique for that particular shot.

Couldn't agree more. Still, it's nice to see a particular lens a few different time in a few different lighting situations and locations. We all need to exercise some self control in this regard and keep the spirit of the thread focused on the theme of showing the particular characteristics of a lens, and less on simple photo sharing.

Sometimes we're blinded by the "Alt Factor", but let's face it, there's a lot of junky photos (mostly mine..

) in the AIT.

I like the idea of breaking it down into months or at least more bite-size chunks of photos, with separate gallery pages defining that line. Organizing by lens would be nice too, but let's not dream too much, eh? ;-)

The FM hosted images are not the cause of the problem. The root of the problem is having a 300+ page thread that could be 1000 page along with thousands of images by the end of the month.
That is the "real problem"!

why not every few months archive the thread, create a new thread by the same name, and for the first post in the new thread post a link to the archived thread. that would keep the number of pages down but also keep the history.

That was my original idea and it's the easiest one. Once the thread gets to 50 pages, it is archived. A new thread could be created by AIT posters or by me with a link to the previous archived thread.
