No, you weren't. They won't be contacting people until a little later, about the same time they post the information on their website. Don't worry, you'll hear from them when they're ready for your camera.

Based on my conversation with the Canon rep yesterday, it doesn't sound like this list is to establish priority. It's only to be notified when they release the information, so you don't have to keep checking the website for updates. It sounds like they will schedule repairs based on some kind of a serial number / purchase date combination.

So there was no confirmation email sent to you letting you know a case had been opened?

What's your serial number range? Can you check the date code inside the battery compartment?

Now I wonder if we are going to see apologies from all the people who slammed those with legitimate problems? I very much doubt it. There is no doubt that without RG and possibly this forum even canon would have done nothing about the problem. As usual when people find problems with canons QC they get slammed here. Maybe now the naysayers will just shut up and realise that they are retarding progress with their worthless opinions?

Yeah right....

Not so....you throw the Pity Party, and we'll come. It'll be fun eating the milktoast and drinking the koolaid.

Now, let's be real for a second. Anyone who's been around this forum for awile, or any other, knows that there are a TON of folks who sit around and obsesss about thier gear, pixel peeping, worrying. It's a matter of crying wolf, my friend. I bought my III and so did a half dozen of my fellow excellent and experienced photographers and we had NO problems. Arthur Morris reported NO problems on a dozen cameras he used. So it's a matter of credibility and the 'cry wolf' effect.

Now quit whining and get your camera fixed.

Wow. pity party? What a childish response to defend yourself.

I never got a case number on the phone or via email. But I later that day got an email asking me to take survey based on my call and it had a case number in it.

So you mean there isn't and has never been a problem with the AI-Servo tracking capabilities of the 1D Mark 3?

Looking at your website, I suppose I can understand why. For nature photography both of the 1D3's I used performed very well. Generally for motorsport they perform very well.

However, I don't use the same camera setup that I use for wildlife on say a game like rugby. I don't see any rugby photos on your site so therefore your point is moot. If your 1D3 works for you, I am genuinely happy for you. It just so happens that mine does not work for people sports. Subjects are small, move back and forth, left and right, dashing through highlights and lowlights and often wear clothes which are difficult to focus on. If you shoot with the 1D Mark 3 that is. My 1D2N performs this job with ease, day in day out, it works every time and my keep rate is exceptionally high, which must mean by default my skills as a photographer are good. Unless of course my half brain cells shut down whenever I pick up a 1D Mark 3! Perhaps this is the unknown Canon 1D3 side effect that makes all of us photographers shoot badly with the body.

I am not angry and I don't mean to cause offence, but your comments were just the funniest thing I have read on this forum in a while.

Now try to karate chop me JB!

Just got off the phone with Canon. The lady said she spoke to a technician at Irvine, and she relayed to me that the "fix" is not "official", so they aren't saying anything as to when we'll get the fix.

She then went on to say that it will receive the necessary repairs needed while at the facility. Whatever that means. Maybe her technician who she made clear her name was "Amanda" was actually someone from USA canon about legal ways to relay the care needed to address the issue.

So when is Canon's statement about the fix on their website actually going to be "official"? Is what Chuck says not official anymore?

I would say that when the details about this whole repair project is on the Canon website, then you will get straight and more official answers from the various contact points, including the service centers. Until then, who knows....

It's not that far away.

I hope Canon Canada is going to be qiuck in figuring out how to do this fix and that the fix actually works!!

I acutally just dropped my cameras off at this past monday at the Canon Calgary location to get the sensors cleaned. I asked if there was any ETA on what they are going to do to fix the 1DIII focusing and was told there are no focus issues with the 1DIII and that i was the first person in calgary to say i was having issues (despite the fact that Rob Galbraith is from Calgary). WHen i pointed out the Galbraith articles, i was told that there have been NO actual 1DIII owners who have complained about focus issues to Canon (despite the fact that i send two emails to Canon canada regarding focus issues).

anyway, I hope this fix works and i REALLY hope that Canon canada is in the loop on what to do, coz up to now they seem to be living in their own little world and have me EXTREMELY pissed off. Although i should add that I am happy that i did get both my 5D and 1DIII back in 4 days this time.

OK called back and spoke with the Pro SLR support group. He politely told me that the parts are on order and that I will be contacted when they arrive via telephone for a return shipping label. So it looks like you need to talk to the right guy, but, he said that I might be notified from the service center if anything changes while my camera is at the facility.

I'm assuming Canon is going to pay shipping both ways for this sort of "recall". I sent mine in for a repair a few months ago and the cheap bastards wouldn't budge for a prepaid label.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else notice what looks like
vertical banding in all the shadowed areas of that volleyball picture
in the above link? Perhaps it's a pattern in the flooring material, since
it is somewhat visible on some tiles to the right of the image.

Any thoughts?

OK, strange question but does or will Canon give a good guy coupon for a 100(or some amount) off you next purchase for inconvenience?

Note the recent update(s) to Rob's last entry:

Q. What is the fix that Canon has developed?

A hardware fix. Specifically, a component in the camera called the sub-mirror must be adjusted. The sub-mirror - also called the secondary mirror - is a tiny mirror behind the main mirror that passes light down to the autofocus module in the base of the mirror box. The adjustment procedure may include the swapping of one or more parts that make up the sub-mirror mechanism, though the sub-mirror component itself will not be replaced.

Also some changes in here (compared to the initial text), me thinks:

Q. Are all EOS-1D Mark III cameras affected?

No, says Westfall. Canon is planning to provide a simple way for EOS-1D Mark III shooters to identify if their camera was manufactured in production runs that included a sub-mirror assembly that is either adjusted differently or contains one or more different parts than a fixed sub-mirror assembly. Canon is not suspending shipments of the camera; reading between the lines, this is probably because recently-manufactured bodies already contain the sub-mirror fix.

Westfall stresses that even if an EOS-1D Mark III falls within the affected production range, it won't necessarily be exhibiting autofocus problems, but Canon doesn't have a way of determining which ones will and which ones won't. As a result, Canon USA will perform the repair procedure on any cameras in the affected production range that EOS-1D Mark III owners choose to send in. This will probably be true of Canon service centres in other parts of the world too...

...Reading between the lines again, we think that Canon is trying to communicate to owners of the camera that if they're happy with its AI Servo autofocus performance, they're under no obligation to ship it to Canon for the sub-mirror fix. In other words, this is not a product recall. At the same time, they'll perform the procedure for any customer whose EOS-1D Mark III falls within the affected production period and wants the procedure done.

===> What's really going to be interesting is if they don't update the firmware when they perform the hardware tweaks. Then we can all wonder if their trying to de-tune the AF via firmware caused problems with a 'properly-working' AF system...

As a professional, Richard Cranium, this thing has cost me a lot of money with soft pictures. Fixing is required by their warranty, a show of good will for saying nothing other than learn the custom functions. I will tell you this, this was my first off the shelf purchase sight unseen and I will never do it again. I was not telling or asking Canon to pony up anything. I was simply asking if they have ever done something like that.

As a professional, why would you upgrade to a new system without waiting for any issues to be discovered and resolved? This doesn't sound like a good business decision. Of course we know these types of problems shouldn't happen, but history has taught us that these problems occasionally do happen. The desire to have the latest camera is not worth risking your business.
