p.4 #1 · FREE canvas print!!!

How long is this running? I don't have any photos I want on canvas yet, but sure hope to get some with the fall foliage.

Butch,

My system is profiled as well. When I print to my Epson 3800, and when I send my work out to labs for larger prints, the prints match the screen exactly.

With the canvas, the colors didn't shift, but they are muted (lack of contrast basically). Based on reports here, some prints are coming out great. I have seen some of the pictures and they indeed have good contrast.

After seeing my results, I think I could have made the required adjustments if a proofing profile was available. If anyone has other suggestions as to the varied results, please chime in.

I am glad yours came out as you wanted it. The comapny seems to be doing many things right.

Regards,
Darrell

I did an online chat with the company and explained how my image came back with a lack of contrast. They made it clear that they "aren't a color matching lab", quoting them directly.

They said others have brought this issue up before and they are considering providing profiles, but obviously, they haven't yet.

This was a good experiment for me. I do like the canvas concept, and can see where my image would look very nice with some adjustments for the canvas output.

I will probably pursue this with a company that provides profiles though so the guess work is reduced/eliminated.

Curious if you asked them about the mounting hardware. My 24"x36" arrived with standard wire mount - what size canvas did you order? Seems odd they provided you a non-standard mount.

Beauport,

I ordered a 16x24" canvas, with a standrad black frame. Maybe the odd bracket comes only with the Framed Canvases.

I didn't asked them about it when I did the chat as the print contrast and profile issue was the important concern. The bracket is more of an annoyance that could be worked out.

Darrell

Well, one more experience.
Quick turn around, no shipping problem. Printed a 20x30 canvas from an 8MP image. Slight soft at the edges in the original. The canvas was as sharp as my original print (at 11x17), slight less saturated (but the original image had extremely intense blues in the Bermuda water). Original was also on semigloss Ilford paper. Museum wrap style worked well. Came with "beehive" mounting pieces, instructions.
Overall, very pleased.
I'd use them again!

Got mine today. I had to call a day after I placed to order to change my wrap color and it was no problem. It's packaged real well. And the 24x36 canvas looks great. Wouldn't hesitate in using them again.

Here's a photo of the 24"x36" I had them make. I"m very pleased.
(edit: the white balance is not way off, the walls in the room are a gray/taupe)

How did they treat the corners on your wrapped photo Beauport? The bottom left looks just a bit loose. Any snaps?

Thanks.

Are those full bleed?

Duncan, are you doing canvas? I saw some large canvas in Chicago recently that I really loved! Varnish/spray finish, etc.

I am thinking of doing some on my 7600. I'll upgrade that this spring to the 7880 or 9880.

Best,
Michael

Got mine a few days ago. Overall, quite pleased. The color is not as vibrant/saturated as my original print. I upgraded to 24x36. For $35, that's a pretty good deal. Thanks for the headsup!

Michael:

Yes I am doing canvas printing with three printers:

1. ColorSpan Giclee FA - dye based printer for maximum pop with 80+ year longevity up to 39"x48".

2. Canon iPF8000 and iPF9000 for 44" and 60" prints respectively with a very wide gamut (full Adobe 1998) with a lot of pop and 100+ year longevity. I am super impressed with these two printers and have them very accurately profiled using an X-Rite Pulse ColorElite profiling system. I also use Gloss, Matte and Satin Echo Shield spray's for fantastic look/feel.

3. I take pride in the quality of my wraps including corners and quality of stretcher bars used.

I have done quite a bit of printing for a number of picky FM members with very positive feedback.

Duncan, no snaps. The corners were finished nicely but I see what your question concerns and frankly I'm not sure what that is. I looked at the corners carefully when I got the canvas and don't recall this. The print is in my office and I'll take a look on Monday as to what we're seeing here.

Thanks Beauport. Could be just the angle but it should be very snug.

I haven't used my code yet, and it's supposed to be used by the 30th, I got an email today saying my expiration has been extended for another 30 days...

Quite nice.

Duncan, I looked at the canvas this morning and it's deceptive. It looks like it may be loose but upon closer inspection it's the image itself that gives the appearance. There's a light section surrounded by dark at the corner. The canvas itself it very tight and smoothly wrapped.

Hi all,

I suspect the mentioned prints are not treated with a coating or varnish. This can be a problem with dark colours and blacks. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Duncan,

I try to print some serious quality on my IPF8000 but I'm still searching for a trick to fold the canvas without cracking.

To prevent cracking I apply varnish first and frame the next day.
I would like to offer the customer a choice, no varnish (lower price/lower contrast/easier damaged/lower glare etc) or varnish. But with the cracking issues I don't feel satisfied.

I tried several canvases (stretching and non stretching).

PS. I live in the Netherlands so you'll be helping out a college, not a competitor.

Gert - first, don't varnish first, it will always crack that way. Second, getting the good/proper media is what eliminates cracking. Which media are you using?

Feel free to PM or email me as to not hijack the thread.

Thanks Duncan! I appreciate the info. It sounds like you have a nice setup!

I am still kicking around ideas about what I may do in the future. I am hoping to get back to work around April now.

I may go with a 44" around that time and do some printing for local artists. That is assuming I can be trained well enough to do a good job on the corners.

Best,
Michael

I got mine too, and was very happy. I did a 2x3 foot wrapped canvas of a photo of a neon sign and had them match the color of the neon on the wrap. They did a great job.

Wow - great to still see everyone enjoying this post! Threads usually fade away pretty quickly, and it's good to see people having their canvases - helps to keep it near the top & allows others to see it!

Billy

PS - Don't be shy about putting YOUR face in with your canvas!
