p.1 #1 · 17-40 come with a lens hood?

Hi all,

Silly question, methinks. I am looking at buying a Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 L USM from BuyDig. It's the full USA retail package, but the website does not inform me as to whether or not the retail package includes the lens hood.

Does it? I'm sure someone here knows. :-)

Thanks!

Chris

Yep, all L lenses do.

And a nice soft lens case! Why don't Canon wake up and give a hood with ALL their lenses?

Because it costs them money. Profits matter. Juicy higher cost items get spiffs, tighter lower end cheapskate don't get all the bells and whistles, kind of just like my pricing. Their stock is doing rather nicely. Steve

Comes with the EW-83E hood... I couldn't care less if there comes hood or not, I don't use it.

17-40 fixed hood is a joke. It's just so wide it does almost nothing unless the sun happens to be in just the right spot on the sides. If you are using a 1.6 crop camera, the hood designed for a 24mm L is better on the 17-40 than the one designed for the 17-40, but only a little better. Quite a bit better is a rubber collapsible hood, but you have to remember to "trombone" the hood to keep it compatible with your zoom length. With my 17-40 on my 20D, I use the hood from my 24L. On my 5D, I don't bother with a hood near 17, it's pretty pointless, and I'll hold my hat in the right spot to block the sun, if necessary.

All Roy says is good and true. The EW-83E hood with is huge and
will be almost useless on OP's 1.6 cf XTi. Rubber Hoya Multihood is
my route and it's a good consolation to know that the 17-40L isn't as
prone to flare as are many other zoom lenses.

Yes, the 17-40 ROCKS! (I handle low light with a 24L. I could trade both for a 16-25 MkII, but I think I'm ahead the way I have it, for both IQ and lowest light.)

On a crop camera, the best hood for the 17-40L is the EW-83J designed for the EF-S 17-55/2.8IS. It fits perfectly and you can get pretty cheap clones on ebay.

Could be, but he forgets to mention that a lot of people use a hood to protect their lens as well. I'd rather have my lens bump into a wall with hood attached than not. Saved me quite a few bucks, looking at the state of some of my hoods and that includes the one that comes with the 17-40.

(All my gear is covered under a rider on my home renters insurance... Never filed a claim, and if I ever do, I guess my rate would jump, but I am covered for any kind of damage or loss.... Some people still swear by a hood for protection. For me, I go filter-less and unless there is a reason expect harsh environs, I often go hood-less too. Whehooo... living in the fast lane! :

The normal fix for the ridiculous 17-40 hood on a crop camera is to substitute a 24mm hood such as the EW-83D. I've actually modified this hood for use on a 5D, it was a few minutes' work with a Dremel and makes a far more practical package.

Don't try to use a pop up flash with the stock hood on, either. It casts huge shadows on some subjects.

Interesting mod. Is that worth doing for a 1D?

Put the EW83E on your 10-22 lens and buy the correct one for the 17-40..I think it's the 24mm hood..then they all work fine !!

Spend a little extra and buy the EW-83J, which is the hood for the EF-S 17-55mm. It does not vignette on 1.3 or 1.6 bodies and does a MUCH better job than the EW-83E

No, simply because the hood does not vignette on a 1.3 crop! It _barely_ vignettes on a 5D, hence the mod.
