I've never paid attention because it never affected me before, but what is the average lag time between a camera coming out and lightroom or ACR or bibble supporting it? It just dawned on me this morning that getting a new model is a mixed blessing if you shoot raw. Just wondering if it will be on the order of days, or weeks, or months. Thanks.
I got my 1D3 from one of the first few batches into the UK. By the time I had received it, I had already upgraded from CS2 to CS3 and ACR 4.1 so my only experience of this is that Adobe (certainly in this case) was very quick in getting their new software out. Given the price, I am not surprised!
Adobe tends to be rather unpredictable. They release updates to Adobe Camera Raw pretty much on a timetable, not according to the availability of new cameras. If a new camera comes out just before an ACR update is about to be done, support can be within a few weeks. If the camera comes out just after an ACR update is "locked down" prior to release, it can be a few months.
There is a guessing game going on as to whether Adobe will bother to update ACR 3 (for CS2) with the 40D profile, or if they'll only update ACR 4, trying to force 40D owners to upgrade to CS3.
The first out of the gate is almost always dcraw. I think this is because they don't care about profiling the camera, they just need to know what the identification string is in the EXIF and then they use some kind of generic color profile.
SilkyPix is usually second. Maybe it's their Japanese location, but they often get camera updates pushed out within a week or two.
@Doug: I wonder if it's because the 400D and 1D MkIII have been out for awhile now, that the 40D files work - there isn't alot to change there, from what I understand.
@Joe: Pretty good colors, from the 3 pics I loaded and looked at. Reds seem pretty saturated, maybe it was just those particular pics - I can't say for sure that happens on every one. I have a 1Gb chip full of pics, so I'll have a better idea tomorrow. I'll post anything noteworthy.
