This camera looks hugely attractive, especially with its higher frame rate and weather-sealing. But its "completely redesigned nine-point AF sensor provid[ing] cross-type AF measurement at all nine focusing points" sounds as though it could share some design/tech with the Mark III. Won't the world be holding its breath to see how well it works...

Is the 40D the long-awaited "3D?" What does it lack (other than perhaps 45-point AF)?

I was hopin' for a VF improvement but the rest looks quite good.

Price isn't bad either for a new model.

It does look like a mini 1D MkIII... Got really close for so much less.
6.5fps, weather protection, the same resolution, 9 cross AF sensors...
Better reach for the long telephoto lenses...
It does looks great!

This should mark the final retirement of my trusted D60.

Now I can use the 5D with my wide-angle lenses (17-40, 24 TS-E, 24-105), and the 40D with my telephoto lenses (100-400, and hopefully, eventually 300 f/2.8 with TCs).

I know I've said this before, but I think this time it is real -- after getting a 40D, I won't need a new camera for many years!!!

The weathersealing alone makes this camera very attractive to me (Mainly the dust sealing). I will make the upgrade, But I'm in no real hurry to get my hands on one right away.

VF = viewfinder?

"Canon extends its 'ease-of-reading' policy to the EOS 40D SLR's viewfinder as well. The upgraded viewfinder increases optical magnification from 0.90x to 0.95x, expands the viewing angle from 251 degrees to 264 degrees and raises the eye point from 20mm to 22mm."

I hope they've toned down the shutter racket to match the nice quiet 400D.

I am soooooo excited. They gave me everything I wanted. Lets see how it works! I was reading on Amazon that all the sensors are cross type and work to f/5.6 and I was thinking ...YES - high precision focusing until f/5.6, but then I realized they preserved the 30D f/2.8 and only center point for that.

How about the fact that opening the cf door doesn't shut the camera down anymore? Canon actually listens to customers?

Wow... looks like my 20D is going to be a back up camera.

Exactly what I was thinking. Weathersealing sealed the deal but I'll wait and see how good this camera performs before I buy one.

I have been thinking of getting a used 1D II for a few months. The specs on the 40D meet most of what I was looking for, without the extra weight, and at about 1/2 the cost. After a few get out and about we will know if it has problems. After the issues(real and/or perceived) with the MK 3 I am hoping this one won't be buggy.

Wow--something of a watershed moment for Canon, no? This marks the point at which they stopped worrying about top-end features in the prosumer bodies cannibalizing sales of higher models. Certainly the product of the drubbing received from Nikon in the past year. And Nikon's response is said to be imminent. The competition heats up, and we win as a result!
