Hi,

I use a AF Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED-IF (Non-AFS older model), on which the TC20EII does not mount unless the TC is modified (by filing off a piece that obstructs the mounting of Non AFS lenses).

I was thinking of buying a Kenko 12mm/20mm extention tube to fit between the 300mm and the TC 20 EII.

Wanted to know if anyone has tried this and this setup retains metering on a Nikon D70.

I know this will reduce the min. focus distance of the lens and I may lose AF. I would be using MF and would be taking pictures of small birds and critters at 20 - 30 feet range.

suresh - how about buying the tamron 2x PRO (white body) teleconverter... they are relatively cheap and I know first hand they mount properly and meter/AF properly as well.

Tubes should always be attached to the camera, not between a TC and lens. TC's have optical elecments and are designed for light coming in from lenses with a given range of dispersion.

That said, I have used my Kenko AF tubes in conjuction with my 70-200 and my TC17E and it preserved VR and AF (not that it mattered as I turned both off anyway). The setup was D70s--Kenko tube--TC--lens on a tripod attached to tripod leg of the lens.

I strongly suspect that the Kenko tube will NOT mount between the TC-20E and lens. Specifically, the tube (which has a standard F-mount on the rear) won't mount to the front of the TC-20E, for the very same reason that your 300mm lens won't mount.
