The limitation to 10fps may be related more to the moving hardware than to the memory transfer rates this time, so potentially the 1Ds3 will be faster than 5fps even at 20 Mpx. Also, it should do the Nikon trick of offering a faster frame rates with a smaller number of pixels being used. The only problem with that is that it might undermine the 1D3 sales a bit.
I don't expect a 1Ds3 to be readily available for another year give or take a few months but I could be wrong. It's happened once or twice before now
Alan, the numbers we're talking about are still far far away from modern memory bandwith numbers. The Mk II series was limited by the sensor read-out sample rate, both sensors would spit out about the same number of pixels per second.
If this holds true, and I see no reason why it shouldn't, then Jordan's assumption is more or less valid. Pixel throughput is the same, resolution is higher, framerate will be lower.
At a guess, we'll see 20 to 22 Mpixel coupled to a dual DIGIC III set-up, giving 5 or 4.5 fps, and all the rest that can be copied from the 1D Mk III. Re-designed battery, ultrasonic dust shaker, big LCD screen, live preview, and so on.

Do you think they will up the resolution on the LCD?
Sony now has a 3.5" LCD with almost 1MP (640x480) on one of their P&S cameras. The only stupid aspect of the 1D III was keeping the same 3 yo spec for the LCD of 230kP, which BTW corresponds to a lowly 320x240 resolution. Hopefully the 1Ds III would have at least 480x320 corresponding to 460kP.
It's hard to see that the 1Ds III apart from the FF 22MP sensor and 4-6fps, being any different from the 1D III though. I don't think they'll offer less than 20D pixel density, but with the improved photosites, noise should be almost as good as the 1D III, despite the pixels being physically smaller.
They do seem to be able to pull at least one obvious boner per camera. Things like the screen zooming, quality of it, etc, secondary stuff but still like you say leaving something off a big buck camera that every dinky pos cam has. Steve

Do you think Canon would care at all if this were the case? They'd LOVE it if 20% of the potential 1D3 buyers opted for a 1Ds3...heck, Canon would love it if almost all 1D3 buyers bought a 1Ds3 instead....for double the price. Hmmm...$4000 more on a camera that would probably cost only a few hundred more to make.
The MkIII's sensor technology is predictive of a 20Mp+ FF sensor with better Hi ISO performance for a 1Ds MkIII. The live view will, if anything, be enhanced (the LCD's effective resolution is limited by the preview JPEGs it uses) for commercial/fashion uses.
The buffer/processor equity of 2 Digic IIIs should allow a faster FPS rate.
For such an expensive flagship camera (almost twice as much as the MkIII) every advantage from the MkIII should migrate. But it is hard for me to imagine any other important features not now on the advanced MkIII.
