First attempt at a color infrared conversion (via software). The image has also had on Orton effect applied, moreso to the background than the tree. Looking for a surreal, ethereal effect...does it work?
Thanks for the feedback, good or bad, it is appreciated. Of course, I'm glad folks seem to like it...I do as well, though my wife has expressed that, shall we say, it is not one of her favorites.
Dentman, it is a full spectrum original and coverted to color IR in software. The trees and grass were green, but the tree was, in fact, bright white. I have been considering getting an old digital camera converted over to IR. By the way, are you Brian's buddy....I think he mentioned you to me at one point. I have gone out shooting with him several times, though not recently.
By the way, what are the benefits of shooting with a true IR converted camera as opposed to software conversion. I am, as I mentioned thinking of getting one converted, but not sure of the differences between software conversion and true primary IR imaging.
I started with a Lightroom preset, available for free at http://inside-lightroom.com/colour.html It is the one called Color Infrared by Martin Evening. After that conversion I made further adjustments to color temp, exposure, contrast etc and then applied an Orton blur but limited it mostly to the background.
Very cool image.....I love the surreal quality provided by the IR and the painting-like effect produced by the Orton blur. Its a new age of photography.
wow!!! hi there Howard! yes Im Brian's buddy. We met one time at your gallery showing in Mt Lebanon, IIRC. I didnt recognize your screen name. Thanks for the response, and I do indeed like the post work you have here. If your as interested in IR as I am, check out pifepixel.com they can convert just about any camera for you. On the other hand, if you just dabble from time to time, as I do, Id recomment a hoya r72 filter. On a tripod it runs around 1/2 second exposure on average and produces awesome near IR spectrum. Before you buy the filter, confirm your canon body is IR friendly, as some canon's (and nikons ) do not record IR spectrum very well. PM if I can help.
I appreciate the kind words. If anyone is at all interested I just put a post up about the genesis of this image on my blog post for today, which includes the youtube video tutrial for the 'three layered Orton effect'.
