I am in the same boat as you, however I will not switch. The 350D is a fine camera and will serve me well until the 40D, or whatever it will be called, comes out. I want to stick with 1.6 crop. Hopefully the next xxD will be worth the wait..

And by the time you get fully re-equipped with Nikon gear, the 40D, 6D, etc... will come out... but Nikon will be late with it's D300, so you will sell your Nikon gear, and get the 40D, and by the time you get all re-re-equipped with Canon gear, Nikon will put out it's D300, but Canon will be late with it's 50D...so you will sell all your Canon gear, and by the time you get re-re-re-equipped qith Nikon, Canon will bring out the 50D, and you will be looking for the Nikon D400... and then...

As much I am attracted to the D200,I won't be switching, even if stupid Canon won't come up with 40D(which I've been waiting for 2 years now..). There's nothing in 30D that I ever wanted,so I just have to wait. 20D suits me great, but dust issue is getting on my nerves. I have to clean it once ever 3-4 months.

Think about which manufacturer has the components that suit your needs now - and will in the future. To assume that canon will never improve upon the 30D is probably not a very safe bet. To also believe that Nikon will outpace canon in the innovation department for the next ten years is also probably not realistic. Canon makes at least 3 cameras better than the D200 or D2X (not including the discontinued 1dm2 and 1dm2n), so Nikon is already behind. Nikon does not make their own sensors, and their ability to invest in R&D is less than Canon. Canon also take the knowledge from those high end cameras and apply some of the technology to the lower end bodies.

This is what I am so excited about. I am thinking, scrap that 30D plan and downgrade to this hot baby. Can you imagine the possiblities?

Dammit, they misspelled "discreetly" in the press release.

Tim, with all due respect, I don't quiet understand your post. That reads a bit fanboy'ish which I'm sure you're not. You're not seriously saying that the D200 isn't any good, or that there are far superior cameras in the weather sealed, 5 fps, semi pro US$1400 mark.

It's like saying Ferrari make the two best cars in the world, therefore all other cars (regardless of their price point or target market) aren't any good. Talking about whether someone makes their own sensor is only relevant to forum users. Users couldn't give a toss as long as the camera performs as they expect it to. I don't care if the Canon 5D I'm using has a sensor made by Canon, Sony or Coca Cola.

The point of staying with the manufacturer you're with makes sense (though this isn't quiet your point, is it). But who cares if people switch to Nikon or Canon, its their choice.

I think it is the driver as much as the car. I take better pics with my 30D because I got better. No one is as good as the tool. To many people think that getting some fantasy camera will make them the greatest photographer ever...if that was so then just buy the most expensive camera and best lenses, put it down on the ground and let it take the pictures.

Thank you Rich, well said. Dave Black would be just as good a photographer with a Canon, as Karl Grobl would be with a Nikon. And Schumaker would drive better than most others in BMW.

Compared to negatives and slides, sensor cleaning every 3-4 months is not bad. The non-digital media is always covered with some dust, no matter how much and how often you clean it. And if you view slides (not Powerpoint ones, but the old transparencies ) with a projector, their curvature and thus correct focus changes constantly because the lamp heats them.

Anyone see this article at CNET?

Just wondering which Nikon they think the 1DMkIII is countering...

Hey, this is just me in Wild Speculation Mode™, but what would happen if Canon takes the 1D Mk III sensor design, simplifies it to a 4-channel sensor (rather than an 8-sensor one), and drops one of the DIGIC III chips... And then think 40D.

Wouldn't that be nice? Canon, being as market savvy as it is, will likely tone it down some, just like the xxxD series is less featured than the xxD series. So maybe no live preview. Maybe no ISO50. Definately not 10 fps, but 5. Would make for a nice camera, right?

Again, this is my mind wandering around. Nothing solid to go on, just some "would be really nice" musing...

Wouldn't that be nice if this camera cost not much more than current 30D ($1100)? That way Canon would sell a lot of 1d mkIII . This "trickle down effect" hopes are becoming a bit unrealistic (to put it mildly).

Well, the 1D Mk III is very much in the same price segment as its predecessor. A 40D would not be a 30D successor if it wasn't around the 30D price mark.

Mind you, this musing of mine was wild speculation, so, yes, that precludes any reality check. I'm well aware of that

On the other hand, it's pretty safe to say that Canon will need something more than just a bump to 10 mpixel to put the 30D successor ahead of the existing 10 mpixel competition. So it may not be as wild and unrealistic after all.

There are some speculations that 30D may be that last "middle range" 1.6 crop camera. If the new "40D" is not going to be released at this PMA (almost 100%), there is a good possibility that this speculation may turn true. Otherwise they will have to put "IS in the body" to attract buyers. I am no longer waiting for that.

I think that speculation is pretty baseless and doesn't make a lot of sense considering that Canon is continuing investing in producing EF-S lenses. More 1.6x crop bodies means more potential EF-S lens buyers. There's no way Canon would pass up the chance for that in the gap between their pro and low end body.

Remember that in the not too distant past people were predicting the demise of the EF mount (), well, seeing as the new 16-35 was just released I think that's a far cry too.

Judging by the features of the MkIII and the reaction, it seems Canon is pretty well in tune with the needs of their customers. I have no doubt that they'll release a viable 30D replacement this year.

I personally was really hoping for a 40D my 10D is tired. I borrowed a buddy’s xti and my first impression though is that it was built like a toy. I suppose I will have to go back and re-evaluate my needs and find a body.

How many IS lenses does canon make? What would be their thinking on an in body IS?
