Looks like there is a new Camera Body. 1D Mark III. 10mpix.

From Yahoo News: Canon will begin sales of the EOS-1D Mark III from late-May for an expected retail price of about 500,000 yen ($4,132). The device, with 10.1 megapixel resolution, is equipped with two image processors to allow faster processing of high-quality images.

30D is a strange camera. When it was released a year ago everybody (I for sure) was quite disappointed with the very small upgrade from 20D. I did not have much choice (after selling 20D) and bought it. Half a year ago many hoped for 40D and "everybody" was certain that Canon would release 40D this Spring. The bottom line is that 30D is a solid camera but a very old design and should be upgraded soon. I do not have 30D anymore and may just go for 1D mkIII. I had 30D (two actually) and XTi - di not like either.

Nope. It's still f/8.

That's not what the press release says. Did I misread it?

Just checked the published specs: the 1d2n AF's at EV 0, the 1dm3 at -1

Possible. The AF improved by one stop. But that had to do with light sensitivity, it can AF at -1 EV to 18 EV. It wasn't about max lens aperture, which would go from f/8 to f/11 if misread.

I can't argue with you on much of this. When the 30D came out, it was not enough to make me want to upgrade my 20D. I don't think the elusive 40D would be though, either (obviously depending on final specs). This mark III though - it's a sweet setup. Though I may not get rid of my 20D, it may become the second camera in my bag.

I've been reading through the 1D Mark III white paper and it's truly amazing what the Canon engineers have produced. I think it would be so fun to work on their team to create such a gem. It would be so hard not to talk about your work though! I'd be dying to tell someone, "We're creating a live view DSLR that lets you preview and tweak your focus and DOF before shooting the photo."

Does anyone know if places like B&H offer presales of a camera like this, i.e. you can add your name to a list for when it becomes available? If so, I want on that list!

I bought my 30D this year at a good price - and wont have any regrets at all even if a 40D is released. I have sold the 350D because I didnt like 2 different styles of operation combined with different battery sizes.
Now I have the cash from the 350 and a couple of cheaper USM lenses I no longer use, I was deciding between another 30D and waiting for the 5D replacement, or just biting the bullet for a 5D now

I always wanted to make the final upgrade a 5D - until the 1Dmk3 was announced. For once my total faith in the 5D being perfect for my needs has been slightly jarred. I really want to go full frame to maximise my lenses for landscape shots, but the 10FPS & AF speed of the 1Dmk3 also appeals for my second love of motorsports

I really thought the 5D was the answer until I saw the new model reports ...............................

mfurman: I cannot imagine anyone buying 30D. How is Canon going to deal with it?

I think the concept of a 1.6x crop camera aimed at the 'advanced enthusiast' is being phased out. More and more the prosumer can make the choice between entry-level 1.6x crop 400D or full-frame 5D. If they make the latter choice they have to pony-up the big bucks for now but the price is coming down slowly but surely. If a 1.6x 40D comes out with 10, 12 or 100 megapixels I still don't want it. Assuming no malfunctions I will happily use my 350D for years to come until affordable full frame comes to market.

I just read the white paper. There are so many cool features. The auto focus sounds wonderful. The live preview seems like a cool feature but I don't know how often I would use it. They've even got grid lines for different aspect ratios.

I am curious in terms of absolute image quality how this compares to the 5D?

I am with you. I was planning on getting a 5D but this sounds great. I was hoping for smaller size though.

I had 30D (two actually) and XTi - di not like either.

In one sense the 30D looks like a fine camera. It produces excellent images, it has a good interface, works with great lenses, cost is reasonable, and all the rest.

But this really only works if you look at it in isolation. If you look at it in the context of the rest of the market it is considerably less compelling right now.

Sure, if one already owns a bunch of Canon lenses, currently has a rather old camera (say a 10D perhaps, or older), and really need to upgrade to a 1.6 crop factor camera in this price range the 30D makes some sense. But for other buyers the benefits are much less clear: a new DSLR buyer with no investment in existing lenses, a current 20D/350D owner looking to upgrade, etc. From their perspective the 30D does not look so attractive - in comparison to comparable 10MP offerings from other manufacturers or, for some, in comparison to the 400D.

To attract existing crop sensor Canon users who want to upgrade, Canon probably doesn't have to do much more than up the MP count, add dust reduction and so forth - basically make the camera at least competitive with non-Canon alternatives. However, this won't really solve the problem of the new buyer who is not already invested in Canon. While the Canon reputation is still there, the technical advantages that Canon used to hold in this segment would not be a factor.

I still have to think that Canon is intending to move this market segment towards full frame before too much longer. That would differentiate Canon from the competition in this market segment - no one else has this feature - and it would also compell quite a few current Canon users to upgrade.

Regarding the new 16-35mm:

"Slightly larger than previous lens: filter diameter 82mm, was 77mm; length 111.6mm, was 103mm; weight 635g, was 600g."

Damn, looks like I'll have to buy new filters if I decide to ditch my 17-40mm which has a filter diameter of 77mm. I'd rather not use a step down ring.

There is no doubt in my mind - a new 1.6 crop prosumer model is in the works. Canon's earnings reports as well as the competition have proven that the segment is highly lucrative. What is in doubt is the "when" of it's release, not the "if". I also believe that they are going to add 3 things to the 30D to get there: better AF (NOT the 1 series AF though), a 10MP sensor, and the antidust. What is also possible is the jump in ISO and some weather sealing, which immediately puts the 40D above the D200 in performance. Canon knows where the significant portion of the market lies, and they will not abandon it. They also have no reason to make the 30D replacement full frame - why incur the cost when your competion is crop? They also have the opportunity to stifle the D200 by bracketing it between the 40D and 5Dm2, effectively choking out it's market appeal.

1.6 crop may be an area they don't want to go head to head with CCD based cameras.

Oh, and regarding the not-yet-materialised 40D, the rumours that it will not appear at PMA ...

This is what's on the CeBIT website about Canon's presence at the Digital Imaging hall:

Exhibitors digital imaging - Canon

Canon features its whole digital imaging line - from shooting to printing. It has the ideal product for amateurs and professionals. The spotlight this year is on the 20th anniversary of the EOS line, which has been Germany's most loved SLR system for years.

Naturally, the Canon family of products flexes its muscles at the show with other products too - the digital IXUS range, PowerShot, PIXMA, SELPHY, ImagePrograf, CanoScan, and XEED.

Make of that hint what you want ( http://www.cebit.de/digitalimaging_e and select Canon from the pull-down menu.)
