p.3 #1 · Blockbuster girl [MORE PICS p.6]

Hey there Asim...I enjoyed the entire series. I agree with zzcoyote- the intimacy is nice without a glam feeling. I also would like to see more of the color images. I'm very much a B&W guy usually, probably stemming from my days shooting Ilford HP5 in college and medical school when I had access to a darkroom for free, so I understand your relative lack of comfort with color images. Still, I am drawn to the color image above for some reason.

I also sympathize with your lack of time for shooting...unfortunately Step 1 and Step 2 require a decent time comittment. I've been there, but don't worry - things will get better in residency. Keep up the good work!

For those who wanted to see some color shots, here are two other ones I was fiddling around with. The colors are probably somewhat screwy (esp. the second one) since I know my displays are off.

1

I know I could crop out the thumb but for some reason, I kinda like it there...

2 - playing with colored layers

thanks for viewing!

Sucks about the lighting. I would have persued something, or sent a bag of crap to his door.

Heh, funny thing is, I have no idea where his door actually is...

anyway, congrats on the PHD and the great shot.

Thank you - it was a long haul, but thank god it's phinally done!

Great shots, l like #6 the best... Color of her eye's are gorgeous.

Thanks - that's my fave too. Yep, the eyes are definitely lovely. Thanks for the comments!

My Initials are MS... I don't think it was me though.

nope, definitely not you...

In this same thread, I have a question about approaching people like the girl in Blockbuster.
I see many ladies/girls that I would like to photograph. What would you say is the best approach to ask someone if you could photograph them, especially a "non-model"? I've thought about printing cards up with a photo of one of my models on one side, then just a few words like "Would like to photograph you if interested" on the other side or something to that affect. I just don't want to look like a pervert when asking a person to model for me.

Well, my success with this is limited, but I'd say just make some cards and just get the guts and go talk. I'm more of an introvert, and it's been kinda a fun exercise just to go up to random people and talk to them - had some interesting conversations regardless of whether or not someone ends up posing for me. You might try first in a coffee shop or somewhere low stress, i.e., not ever guy is there to hit on a chick aka bar setting, and go from there. Also, it's a matter of confidence - the first few times I was somewhat shaky and it came across as such. But just remember, they can't kill you, and generally, people are nice and won't tell you to go away. If you behave politely, they probably will too. Now if a girl is with a guy, I generally wait until the guy goes to the restroom or some other time as to not encounter the guy - I don't want him to think I'm hitting on his friend regardless.

Good luck!

Wow, those eyes. Great job on these. #4 is the only one that doesn't work for me because she looks decapitated. That said, I really love her eyes and the glance to the side in this shot. Just the crop isn't working IMO.

These are gorgeous, Asim... great conversions, and the color one is fantastic, too. Cheers

Thank you very much for commenting, Jay. Sorry - was away for the holiday. Seeing as how you are one of my favorite "converters", that's quite a compliment coming from you! Happy new year too ya..

Thanks for the intimacy comment - that's what I was going for. I'm not too good with the whole FHM/Maxim look.

I also sympathize with your lack of time for shooting...unfortunately Step 1 and Step 2 require a decent time comittment. I've been there, but don't worry - things will get better in residency. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, it's nice to know others have gone through and made it relatively "unscathed" and been able to enjoy their hobby.

Thanks, Patrick. I will definitely try to get more variety next time.

Thanks for your input. I see what you are saying about that cropping; unfortunately, that's all I captured at the time. I will try to give more room when I shoot next time.

Beautiful portraits. #4 is a bit too tight but otherwise I do like the poses and crops. The black and white conversion is very well executed too creating rich tonal range.

I think color works much better. She seems too pale in B & W. Just my two cents. Nice work.

I really like the first one of the second group, excellent color shot. I think you nail it here. Her eyes looks beautiful and I also like the composition and light. She look´s calm and also looks very comfortable with the camera. Great job.

I would've preferred less arms/hands & more face on #6. The B&W's don't do her eyes justice!
