p.1 #1 · Blockbuster girl [MORE PICS p.6]

This is the first time I've had any desire to pick up the camera in the past 8 months (more on that below). The model (I met her at Blockbuster...not quite a good a story as Eldor's) asked me to leave her mostly "as is" (though she did modify that slightly after seeing quick proofs). Your comments and criticisms are welcomed.

Please note that the color/luminosity might be off on these. I had an unfortunate incident before I moved from St. Louis where a fellow FM'er borrowed and broke (and did not fix nor offer money for) one of my AB800s and also stole my Monaco calibration puck (stay away from a guy with the initials M.S.). Unfortunately, I was moving at that time and finalizing my Ph.D. dissertation, hence couldn't really take time to think about these things. Please be careful when you let others borrow your photographic gear. As such, I've had zero desire to pick up my camera until recently.

I realize that I might have non-traditionally cropped some of these, and facial features could use more photoshopping, but I was trying to stay within the parameters which the model stated. I did take some more liberties with the last image.

Thanks for your comments!

I really like them all except for number 4. The crop is too close imo. The rest that show some hands/arms are really nice though. Post more!

Pretty girl. I like the first one, for the timeless quality. She looks like she could be from any era and the crop works. The last one is wonderful. Why turn away from those beautiful green eyes, but I wish I could see Both of them. I love the line of her hands in the last one also.

The tighter crops of 2, 3, and 4 make her seem like she is all head and a wide one at that.

Would love to see a fuller photo of her, body included.

The lighting looks great.

And all in all I am glad she inspired you to pick up your camera again.

Beautiful lady. 2 and 6 are the ones I like. Some of the others have her head kind of disimbodied.

I think number 3 is my favorite. The hands and arms fight with her beautiful face and big round eyes inside the tight crop.

Asim,
Great to see you posting again.. sorry about your troubles with others, but the model is great and I kind of like the tight comps on these, especially the last, her eyes are just wonderful!

Long time no see Asim. I've had the same feeling for shooting. I've been doing very little. I like them, but the hands do take over some of these... maybe if there was more space it might be les so. She has great eyes and I would like to see a shoot geared more toward them and in color because they are so nice. I do like the conversions, but maybe a little harsh for this type of in close image.

Nice to see you back shooting again... get her back in and show me those eyes. Also back off a little so we can se more of her.

#3 and #6 look the best to me.
Tighter crop on #6 might make even more impact. Did you try it?

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I can see that there's a variation in opinions - that's good!

A little more on the background for the shoot before I address specific points... These were taken in my studio (the bottom floor of my apartment) and unfortunately, I was unable to get my backdrop paper from storage before the shoot. On the wall behind the model was a long piece of blackout fabric (used as a screen), but I couldn't get it to look good with the model. Hence, I moved her about 8 feet forward and shot from angles to minimize the background, thus the tighter crops. For some reason, when I shot more full-body, etc., I just didn't get a good feel for things. I had her sitting on a stool (she felt awkward and looked uncomfortable standing since she hadn't really been in front of a camera before) and had her lean against the back of my Ikea chair. [Un]fortunately, the best shots in terms of her look came when the hands were used to prop herself up, etc.

I think I preferred (esp. in this case) the close-up, intimate nature with the model with whom I was talking concurrently while shooting. Things just seemed too disconnected further out; I'm sure the fact that I hadn't shot since Spring didn't help things either, so I decided to keep it simple - 1 key, 1 reflector fill, and 1 occasional hair light. Now that I feel more comfortable with her, I will in the future shot loosely. Plus, I wanted to do things a little differently than normally, hence inclusion of the arms within the frame.

I agree within the context of her arm being visible, but if it were not there, I think it might work better.

I too agree on this, but felt getting rid of them makes things too tight/awkward looking.

Thanks for the empathy - I've gotten over it now and trying to get back in the saddle, though no doubt, studying for my medical licensing exam/returning to 3rd year of med school isn't going to help things!

As for the photos, I like them a lot! Also, nice work picking up this cutie and even moreso on getting her to appear so comfortable.

She loosened up a lot more (and so did I) after her friend who came with her left. We're hopefully going to shoot again, though perhaps outdoors if not too cold, in the next week or so.

Thank you for the kind words! I've really worked on getting the guts up to go talk to random people about my photography, etc., to try to get more people to pose.

Sorry to hear about you story on the camera equipmnet. I never lend my stuff out except to my brother.

I've since insured my gear and also will be much much more careful about loaning things out - probably only to pros who I know have insurance if things break etc and will cover the costs.

Congrats on the PhD!! What did you do it on/in?

Thank you! I did it in sensory neuroscience. Unfortunately, no rest for the weary - back to med school.

I do really like the timelessness of #!, Asim, and you got a nice variety of expressions in those great eyes. I especially am fond of the impish look in #5.
I agree that more of her beautiful eyes in color would be nice. I empathise with the shooting conditions hee, I've had similar shoots especially before I moved to my current home.
As for the breakage/theft of your gear, it's such a shame that something like that would happen to such a kind generous person like you.
